The bottom line is - I enjoy TEFL teaching and I want to have a career in it. Am I correct in summising that this is not possible? Especially not with a child?

IMO, you'd be correct in surmising that it won't be easy, for the reasons posters have pointed out. But not impossible. A key issue is how much money you have to help set you and your daughter up somewhere - you almost certainly won't get flown out somewhere and have schooling laid on for your daughter with your current quals and experience.

Actually, we lived in Botswana for 3 years and my daughter still regards Africa as "home"

This gives you a big advantage - you and your daughter know the place, and maybe you have some connections? You're in as good a position as anybody to assess whether it might work here.

Hi there
Read this post as I too am a single parent and have been toying with moving on.
Have you thought about Turkey? Some private colleges here provide accom, state medical insurance, a flight home and free schooling for 1 kid plus reasonable wages plus paid summer holidays if you sign for another year. Unfortunately they hire around May time (though some may have last-minute vacancies). Go to the Turkey forum but don't worry if it's a bit negative-lots of people here are working at language schools which is a different kettle of fish
Not as exotic as Africa or India but doable with a kid and close enough to the UK for emotional security
PM me if you like
