Z (can't remember the director's name. Music by Theodorakis. Irene Papas and others star. Haven't seen it for a couple of decades but would love to see it again)
Yol (Yilmaz Guney directed this harrowing film from his prison in Turkey. The film was banned in Turkey until relatively recently - perhaps because it refers at one point to "Kurdistan")
Bride of Frankenstein (even better than the first Frankenstein film. Also starring Boris Karloff. Inspired many of the scenes in "Young Frankenstein" eg. the blind man and the monster's visit to his cottage)
Les Enfants du Paradis (a classic if ever there was one) |

Dear FTG,
"Z"'s director was Constantin Costa-Gavras, who also directed "Missing" and "State of Seige", among others.
Regards,
John |

A few more to add.
Andrei Tarkovsky - Solaris, Stalker (Russia)
Andrzej Wajda - Ashes and Diamonds, Man of Marble, Man of Iron, Danton (Poland - add France/West Germany for the latter)
Bernard Bertolucci - The Last Emperor (France/Italy/UK)
Patrice Chereau - Queen Margot (France/Italy/Germany)
As an aside, I just finished watching Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man. Not "foreign", but definitely worth the watch.
Happy viewing.

City of God (Brasil) should have won best foreign film at last week's oscars. Or even best film! Great 'foreign' films I've seen recently to add to those above...
Raise the Red Lantern (China)
Mama Rosa (Italy)...truly a great film
Shiri (Korea)
Joint Security Area (JSA)(Korea)
Most films by Pedro Almodovar (Spain) |

| cheers been_there, I was in the DVD shop earlier and I saw run Lola Run. I remembered it was on your list so I got it out. Great film and a fantastic soundtrack. Don't you think that Lola(Franka Potente) must have been knackered making it though. |

Read the first post and all will become clear, scot. Dead Man fits the bill because it isn't a megabucks production. The story doesn't exhibit the traditonal cookiecutter format so popular among Hollywood genre films. No spoonfeeding the viewer and nary one explosion either.

Shaman
P.S. Is that a typo or intentional irony/sarcasm? Or perhaps it's a devotional display of reverence for the sanctity of almighty Tinseltown...?

"Holywood" has the most bizarre tastes in movie creation. Has anyone watched the Texas Chainsaw Massacre? I watched that two nights ago. Not sure if it's based on a true story, but even if it was.. what a waste of money.
