All the men could sit on sofas, drinking beer, watching sport and talking about women's *beep*. How cool would that be?
No, wait a second...
Although it hasn't been officially organised, International Man's days have been happening quite frequently worldwide. |

But if this happens quite frequently, as Leeroy says, and is basically every other day of the year, as Laura C. says, then how come no one has ever given me a "nacho cake"...is it because I'm unpopular...? Wait, don't answer that.  |

Well, if "nacho cakes" are given to celebrate "International Women's Days", then I suppose "macho cakes" ought to be appropriate presents for "International Men's Days".

Well in Russia they have Dyen Armii on 23 Feb, which used to be a day for soldiers, but now it's kind of 'Men's Day'. They don't make nearly as much of a fuss over it as they do 8th March though. You can't move for flower sellers here (well the sub zero temperatures and mountains of snow don't help either ).
What do I care? They're both a day off work! ooraah! s prazdnikom! |

Here is my U.S.-centric viewpoint on giving flowers: Flowers are ideal in certain situations, like on Valentine's Day when they are delivered to a woman at her workplace. According to many women I know, it makes them feel special to get flowers at work, especially when their female co-workers do not. This doesn't apply to just flowers, but Vermont Teddy Bears, etc. I agree with previous posters however, that just showing up at home with some flowers for your sweetie is kind of lame.

Hi Waxwing! I have three Russian students (from Sakhalin Islands, hope I spelled that correctly) and they were talking about International Women's Day the other day in class. I asked them if there was a Men's Day in Russia and they told me about the armed services day you referred to, which is considered a kind of Men's Day. They also said that more of a fuss was made over Women's Day, though.
How long have you been teaching in Russia? I might PM a few questions to you re: Russian students sometime, if you don't mind. |

I would just like to add that I really hate cut flowers, too. It's always such a mixed emotion when I receive them. "ahh, thanks for thinking of me" but inside I keep thinking, "what the hell am I going to do with these? Put them in a vase and watch them die? How cruel!" Yet, I am always thankful for a person's consideration to buy me something he/she thought I would like. It's tough...
(but I do like chocolate) |

| FYI, International Women's Day is quite an important holiday in Cambodia, along with Human Rights Day and the International Day of the Child (and the remaining 27 statutory holidays!) |

Who needs drugs anyway?
