Would anyone know if there are many teaching options in Ipoh? Keep in mind this would be for a student STUDYING for his MA TESOL, lacking a BA, while having 6+ years experience and a TESOL.
I realize it's tough to get specific info on Malaysia, but any feedback would be appreciated! |
Well, yes, there are some teaching options in Ipoh, but not that many. Most colleges/universities are located in Kuala Lumpur and Penang, with occasional branch campuses in smaller cities (Johor Baru, Kuantan, Kuala Terengganu). Ipoh does have a couple of smaller colleges that are locally-owned, but I forget their names (I visited some colleges back in the 2002-5 period).
It looks like Sunway College University and Olympia College both have branch campuses there. These would be good places to start a job search. http://www.google.com.my/search?rlz=1C1CHMZ_enMY309MY311&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=colleges+in+ipoh+malaysia |

On a semi-related note, I am curious if a teaching job in Malaysia pays enough for someone to pay for graduate school. Every semester I pay a couple of grand for tuition and books. |

KayuJati - I think I'd be stuck with language centers when it comes to finding teaching work. This is - of course - until I finish my MA TESOL (keep in mind that I lack a BA). Correct me if I'm wrong.
steki47 - I myself plan on saving the tuition money here in Ho Chi Minh before making a potential move to Malaysia. I would just need to earn enough money to support my cost of living.
Thanks guys. |

You can make/save enough in Vietnam? Gotcha. Good to hear.
I'm in Japan now and it is possible to save enough for grad school on the salaries here. It is tight but worth it. |

I wish they had "non-standard" MAs when I was a wee lad. What did I have to spend 6 years in higher education to get that for, when people can now teach English overseas for a few years after high school and then get an MA with 18 months of online study?
When I assume control of the consolidated governments of the world, I will turn back the clock on this abomination. |

Yeah I was surprised at how much savings potential there was here when I first came - one of the reasons I'm still here. My savings initially went to traveling, but now I'm interested in opening up some work related doors.
Skyblue2 - I hear ya, though I think the 'MA only' option has been around for some time, particularly in the UK. This particular MA I'm doing is actually on campus. |
