if you calculate that a laowai like you can facilitate his long-term residency in China through an arranged marriage of convenience, you are mistaken.
Most international couples here are technically in permanent limbo never knowing whether the foreign partner will get a new visa next time around.
There is a so-called 'D' visa for foreigners with a Chinese spouse, but I have never met anybody in possession of it.

It doesn't matter if you have a D (dependent visa-married to a Chinese national) or a Z visa. Either way you must have a work permit and to get a work permit you must take a physical which includes a blood sample. Even the Chinese Nationals have to take the physical before working legally.

maybe I shouldn't post this, because it might open a new can of worms: my university supplied me with a work visa and a resident's permit; yet I have NOT had to undergo a medical examination!
I asked some of my colleagues; same answer - no medical checkups!
I wonder why?
Some say that if you arrive new, you have to get a medical examination but not if you just get a new job; this was not true until last year; I had changed jobs a number of times, and each time I had to get a medical fitness certificate.
Maybe my university has a privileged direct line to the PSB!

come on, there's really no need to be personally "abusive" and hostile towards Ger.

I am not guilty as asserted by you. Besides, I haven't read any rules on this forum nor have I agreed to abide by any rules that state one has to be anything other than "an immature twit" - how ever you would measure that notion.

Are some of you non-moderators not being rather a little over judgemental? And you tell me that I'm being "condescending" and "holier than thou". And I never claimed to be a philosopher either, that just comes naturally!

Are you actually thinking about marrying a chinese to avoid visa troubles? If so you'll have to reconsider. A friend of mine has a business here and is married to a chinese with a baby on the way. Getting permanent residentship in china takes time so he still has to renew his f visa every year.

If you don't go out of country (or if they are not really aware that you have), I don't think you will be asked to take another physical.

Yeah, I'm on my third year here and I haven't had to re-take the medical. As long as your periods of employment are contiguous they seem to waive it (logical really, after all you can't be bringing any new diseases in to China if you haven't been resident outside China, can you?).

Well, that's a novelty then.

I left a school many years ago, having done only one semester there; I then joined another outfit. The consequence was that my visa, still valid for half a year, was cancelled by the PSB, and a new one was issued.
Before they could grant me a new work visa I had to see a local clinic for the exam.
But, as said, I changed my employers, and it was in the old days.
One day, those exams will be no longer mandatory for those who live here continuously.
