I think that any activity that uses music of any description and which is NOT just a lyric gap-fill is to be applauded.

I have a few music lessons in my resume of 'standard nick lessons'. I prefer sequencing activities to gap-fills though. I have a nice Beyonce 'If I were a boy' lessons which leads into conditional statements, and songs are also good for identifying collocations and phrasal verbs too.
I may add a 'Born in the USA' lesson now though...I also didnt realise it wasnt a patriotic song. The fact it isnt leads into some interesting discussion topics with the right group of students. |

I've done similar things with some Red Hot Chilli Pepper songs with the advanced classes I have. Students often misinterpret lyrics, and it is easy to listen to the instrumental part of a song and the refrain more than the main lyrics.
Personally I am not much of a Springsteen fan, and preferred his jamming with the E street band. Many of his songs are blue collar work types, so it is a bit surprising that this song is a bit more than that.
REM does a song concerning Vietnam agent orange usage entitled 'Orange Crush', (though to be honest I like their song 'Losing my religion' more). Some people thought this was about the popular soft drink! |
