Ditto ditto ditto. I even like durian Durian- a 'palette volcano.' As you can see, my avatar is Rinjani...
I figure folks either go where the excitement is or watch TV.
As for upheavals, in a country of (what? over 200 million now I'm sure), there's not much chance it'll involve you. You're far more like to die in a highway crash. Anyway, we all go out one way or another! |

Durian brings up a lot of great points, especially considering how safe Jakarta now is for expats compared to 15 years ago. Democracy is fully instituted and there are rarely any safety issues. If you asked me whether I would walk at 1 am in Jakarta, New York, or London, I would definitely say Jakarta. It's far safer than the other two.
This is all not to mention Indonesia is growing almost as fast as China, while the rest of the West is slowly sinking into debt. Lot of opportunities in a place like this, especially with demand for English speakers at an all-time high. |

I agree with an earlier poster - Wall Street is a very stable and well-known language school whose minimum salary is 14 million.
I currently work at Wall Street, holler at me if you need contact info. |

I've got to agree here. I only had one instance where I was actually scared and it probably wasn't justified anyway. My house got raided two days before Ramadan by some rogue police guys most likely just looking for some quick money. It only freaked me out because they didn't have uniforms, had guns, I was alone and there were six of them. Once they realized I wasn't going to let them push me around and a few people showed up, it was fine but when I went to the door I had a moment where I didn't know what the hell to do or what the hell was about to happen. Other than that, lovely place to live. |
