How do you surmise this? He probably was naive or somethign. But how do you know his experience was not as in tune to the politics nd gossio that you know?  |

Common sense?
It was summer school... the majority of the guilty parties would be off on summer leave. I've taught summer school around the Gulf. The administration is usually completely empty and there are only about 10% of the teachers. A newbie coming in for three months doesn't know anyone or care, so ignores the gossip.
The first time I did summer school in a newish university, there were a total of 3 of us around in the foundations department... in admin there was only a couple of the Indian secretaries.
Rather difficult to get a real flavor of a place under those circumstances.
