I didn't mean for people to get into arguments over this.
I was just trying to see if getting an online cert (I don't have one) would even be worth it or required. I do have teaching certifications. I'm certified in the state of Texas for Social Studies, English, ESL, and Special Education, but as far as an actual TESOL, TEFL, CELTA, etc...I don't have one (and I'd prefer not to lose a month of my time to pay 2-3 times as much as an online course to get one.
Really, though, thanks for all the information everyone's given me. Especially H5N1. I'll keep your experiences in mind and make sure I have multiple copies of my criminal history and transcripts, etc. on hand in case something happens with my documents. |

An online certificate may be what is legally required, but it will severely limit your job options when you get here. ILA, Apollo and Language Link are unlikely to hire you, since they run the CELTA. I don't know about VUS, but you'll certainly be at the bottom of the pile of CVs. |

You have a Teaching certificate already, you don't need another.
I know 1 other teacher here like yourself and while I'll admit that he had to jump through a few more hoops than others, his (also) Texas Certification was completely adequate for the WP. The vast majority of us here have ESL certificates because we're not certified teachers in our home countries.
The VN here aren't used to processing this kind of thing either so they'll want to make certain that you are indeed what you say you are. So you might have a couple more hoops to jump through.
This will actually be an advantage for you when seeking a job, you'll be welcomed by the more prestigious schools here and your beginning salary will be close or higher than veteran ESL teachers that are here already.
The ESL certificate would only make the process of getting the WP easier.
For you, applying online would also be an advantage because they'll be more likely to offer plane tickets, sign-up bonuses, living allowances, etc.
You don't really even need Good Luck!
BTW, open discussions are not really arguments. |
