articulate ink,
So basically you only want to hear from people who agree with you and who share your assumptions ?
Maybe you should stay in Weirdsville, California ? |
Assumptions? Agree with me? Weirdsville, California?

AAAAAARRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!
QUIT PICKING ON CALIFORNIA!!!!!!!!!!!!
Honestly, I wonder if it occurs to people who use such blatant generalizations that maybe, just MAYBE, there are people out there who do not fit into them and who are getting just a weeeeee bit fed up with constantly having to read them!!!
Remember your audience, please! I'm sure I'm not the only Californian on this board who doesn't reside in Weirdsville and does not consider herself (or himself) "weird," whatever that means.
Oooops... pardon the rant. Now excuse me while I go... uh... do whatever it is that we kooks do.

Now come on Denise - social acceptance.
What you have to do is come to terms with the fact that there are a whole load of people out there who hate California and Californians. In fact, they can't even want to be in the same room with you without breaking out into a sweat. At the first opportunity they have to address you in social, pleasant conversation, they'll lecture you in how you shouldn't be living in California and how you're excuse that "You were born there so you can't help it." is just not good enough. THey will make your life a misery to the point where you are afraid to mention that you are from California every again and you'll find yourself resorting to vague generalisations like, "Er, well, I'm from the West Coast..." At home later you will go through terrible pangs of guilt that you cannot be who you really want to be and live out the identity that you know is the real, California, sun-burnished you.
But just as you so desperately want to be accepted by these people without comment, so you too need to first learn the rule articulated and, let me importantly add, also demonstrated by Jesus "Do unto others as you would have them do to you."
Over and out. Amen.

I suppose you're right, shmooj.
Still, why are we the scapegoats? There are 30-some million people in California, and the poster (don't remember who--the Weirdsville one) actually thinks that all of us are the same?!?!?
"Whatever, dude." (just staying true to my southern California roots!)

With Arnie at the helm, it's hard not to stifle a smirk when you consider California. |

Okay
Weirdsville is NOT in Kalifornia !
My point is tstll that "articulate ink" will not tolerate discussion if we do not agree with his basic premises !
Sounds to me like (s)he might have problems functioning in another culture ! |

Seems to me that some people cannot accept dissent.
When their ideas are challenged they react ! |

I'm not sure who exactly you are targeting here, but...
I reacted precisely because you did NOT challenge my ideas (which had not, and still have not, been posted on this thread); rather, you made a sweeping generalization that included me. I was irked because I got the impression that you were targeting a specific poster without realizing that your words affected others, as well.
Scot47--please keep the bitterness coming! I've grown rather...uh... fond of it!

Dear Albulbul,
"Seems to me that some people cannot accept dissent.

Well, let's thank whatever Higher Power may be that you and I aren't like that. You agree, don't you?

Albuldul, Scot47,
Totally agree that it is important to keep you mind open to different perspectives and respect that others may have differing opinions, that if you don't neccesairily agree with somebody then you have no right to try and brainwash....
Except when we're talking about discrimination. Racism, sexism, homophobia and ageism aren't "opinions", they are examples of bigotry and people have the right to be offended by them.
Members of minority groups learn quickly that in certain situations they need to be discreet, such as when travelling through different countries - however, they very fact that this is a practice adopted in our daily lives, I beleive, makes us more that capable of adapting to foreign customs.
Respectfully, |

"Bigotry !" A convenient label. Stick this label on and then we do not have to discuss the ideas that are thus stigmatised !
Come on Joachim, we are not all so feeble-minded ! |

Scot47,
I am not labelling anything as bigotry because I'm not able to discuss it, more calling a spade a spade.
People have the right to any opinions they see fit, but if the opinion is bigoted (and homophobia is) then I don't see how this is an opinion to be respected.
There is all sorts of bigotry in the ESL world - certain countries will only consider hiring male teachers, others will only hire females. Certain countries will not hire older teachers and certain (particularly in Asia) won't hire non-caucasians, even if they are native speakers. This is blatant bigotry and really shouldn't be tolerated. |

"Blatant bigotry and it should not be tolerated"
So what do you propose ? We send in the UN Peacekeeping Forces ?
Tell them at the point of a gun who they should hire ?
Joachim, really ! Be a realist ! |
