Dear Steinmann,

All praise to Google:

You'll find a number of links that discuss ageism in EFL/ESL. Looking through a few, it would seem that The Far East is considered by many to be particularly "ageist." (But I got a job in Indonesia when I was almost 50.)

In my experience, the Middle East is not very ageist - lots of geezers in Saudi, for sure.

Regards,
John

Aroud or past retirement age is often too old, but there are exceptions to every rule.

Well, I'm not quite forty yet. I hope that I could get into a position somewhere without too much hassle about my age.

I don't think it should be an issue yet.

Thanks, John, for the Google thingy. For some reason, it doesn't often occur to me to turn to the web for that sort of thing. I can't quite get appropriate search strings worked out in my head. Call it a handicap.

Middle East not terribly ageist? Decent money to be had there, too, I understand. Brings up the standard question: Why isn't everyone doing that?

Not quite 40 is definitely not too old. You might be a good 10 or 15 years older than your colleagues were you to work at a language school, but you should be able to find better jobs with your qualifications.

As to why more people don't do the Middle East... well, the lifestyle's not for everyone! I'm in Oman, and it's quite pleasant, but I came here under peculiar circumstances. If not for those circumstances, as a youngish (I was 31 when I first arrived) gal who likes to interact with men and can be a bit feisty, I would not have come.

And not everyone is qualified, at least for the good jobs.

Yeah, the money is pretty good. Easy to live comfortably and save.

So I'm not too old for this stuff. I didn't think so, but others around the world might submit otherwise.

I hear the chow is pretty good in the Mideast, too. Worth looking at.

I understand that that's not an easy feat.
