So military experience would be good for a teacher in Iraq?

I'd guess that you'd qualify Cleo. Cool But, more likely he is referring to the many TEFLers who have worked on the myriad of military contracts over the years.

Military experience would be good if one is teaching military, but I doubt that it would be all that helpful for those working with embassy staff or at the university(s?) up in the Kurdish areas.

How is the security situation in this area of Iraq? Anyone currently on site able to comment?

I received a PM from someone who does not wish to post publicly on the board. He said:

There may be jobs in Umm Qasr, about 50km from Basra. However, Basra itself has no jobs that are posted anywhere, of which I am aware, at present. Should one get a job at Basra, if one were to exist, or another location in Iraq, one would not be allowed to travel into Basra or let alone off a base, where one would be stationed. One would be a liability and be fired immediately. Therefore, it does not matter where one is stationed. A better question would be what base is best? However, one goes where one is told and has little choice in location.

There are a few exceptions to being allowed to travel outside one's place of work up north in Kurdistan, but most jobs are with contractors (the ones that pay significant salaries) that stipulate no leaving a designated small compound-like or base area.

A classified document has rated the kidnapping level alert as high for the next few weeks. This warning was issued December 30th, 2010. All that contractor ESL teachers are told is that we are to travel with buddies and be extra vigilant in the next while.

That rather matches what another poster here told me in a PM about how he taught on a base in Iraq for just a few weeks. It seemed odd to me when he told me that, but now it makes sense.

Dear Steinmann,

Right here:

or, if you prefer Afghanistan:

They're looking for a few good men.

John

From what I read, a position in Kurdistan might be okay. I don't quite have the experience they're looking for. Got the degrees covered, though. Maybe the military experience would help sway them.

On the other hand, I could just go back to Atlanta and get shot at there.

Dear Steinmann,

I just applied for Iraq and Afghanistan (don't tell my wife.) I'll let you know what, if anything, transpires.

Dear veiledsentiments,

Just a test run to see what happens (well, if they should offer me, say, $100,000+ per year, I might give it a go Very Happy.)

Regards,
John

Seriously, let me know what's up. I'd be interested to find out how that process works out for you.
