The Mexico retirement visa (called rentista) doesn't allow you to work. You have to show income from a source outside Mexico totaling something like $1000 usd per month.

But the OP doesn't need to work. He says, "I have a retirement income that would allow me to live at least at a subsistence level in most any country in the world. So I do not need teaching income to help pay my bills....it would be to either allow for some savings or be able to live in a better lifestyle."

I suppose he could work online though, right?

Hmm, given the mention of the CELTA and that the OP is writing on an EFL forum about jobs...?

I checked in to the Mexico and Thailand programs and I would not qualify based on the criminal record.

Really? I've never seen anything about a criminal record check for Mexico.

Guy-I DO want to work! As for the criminal record check, that is for qualifying under their retirement program. I don't know if the rules for a work visa are different. I may not need to "pass" a background check just to work there. I don't know. But if I want to retire there, I need to have a clean record...

Interesting...I didn't know that. I've never seen a background check for any class of visa, but it strikes me as strange they would have one for a retiree visa and not for work. You learn something new every day. Very Happy

Hello. I suggest Turkey. You can at least stay for 3 months and then completely leave or come back after a couple of days having proved you entered another country nearby. You won't have to do this if you get your residence permit. To get a better chance of this you should open a bank account with a minimum 2,OOO dollars thus demonstrating you have your finances. Take the statement to the police. Learning Turkish language would be a good hobby, you'll meet new people and it will help you in daily living. Enrolling for say 6 hours of lessons per week should mean that they see you are there for educational purposes. Also the language school can give written confirmation of your registration.

The extra income will come from some private teaching which officially you don't do. Alternatively, do them in exchange for a meal.

Wonderfully beaches and countryside, friendly people, interesting culture very different to your own. Generally a warm climate. Tons of history and delicious foods. My suggestion. I don't think they will worry about your past - "water under the bridge." Your residence permit could be for 12 or 18 months and can be renewed.
