| You clearly don't quite understand Economics. The employer is using money that could have been part of your salary to pay someone to find you. Thus, your salary is lowered, as is everyone's salary when any system uses recruiters. |
I think some of the confusion here is between the words 'contractors' and 'recruiters'.
When VS says that recruiters are getting a chunk of the money that could be paid to you, it looks like what she really means is the contractors. These are the people hired by end-user organizations such as KSU, to provide teachers. Bell/ORD are examples of contractors, as are HAK, Vinnell, Al Khaleej etc.
Yes, if you were hired directly, i.e. without the middleman, you might well get more money, but not necessarily the whole difference. Outsourcing can often cost more for the end user.
Nowadays, outsourcing is common not just in education/training, but in all businesses, and is a fact of life we have to live with. Real-estate consultants use the services of accountants, engineers etc. They do not hire these professionals directly.
Recruiters, on the other hand, are people who simply provide a once-off service. They find employees by advertising, shortlisting, arranging interviews etc. This is common in all areas of business, and what is paid to the recruiter is not money that would otherwise go to the professional who is hired. Some companies, (very few, nowadays) do their own recruiting, and pocket the money that is saved. In TEFL, recruiters usually operate in English-speaking countries to find teachers 'on the ground'.

I should add, the quality of contractor can vary considerably. Some are very reputable, and offer great packages, while others are a lot less so, with lousy packages.
The recruiter's role, on the other hand, ends once you hit the tarmac in KSA. They cannot be held responsible for what happens after that. The contractor, on the other hand, is your employer and sponsor, and what they do can affect your life enormously.
I can't comment on the individual contractors, as I am not on the ground in Saudi. To tell who is who, a trawl through the various threads could be instructive.
Some contractors get mixed reviews, which makes it harder, and quite a few change over time. Some for better, and some for worse. And remember, two different contractors to the same establishment could differ considerably from each other. |
