No worries TB.
Well I was - to the delight of others - going to start yet ANOTHER thread on this, but I just realized that I cannot post on the Korea board. (????)
I'd be very interested to know the answer to this question (working in Korea on an MA). I'll look into a few universities and ask directly.
Thanks. |
You have to register to post on the Korean board. But no, you CANNOT get an E-2 work visa in Korea without a BA (any Bachelor's degree) even if you have a Master's degree.
So, Japan looks like your best bet. |

taikibansei - You were quite informative, thanks. I'll tell you, it's a tough choice (whether or not to go through with this degree). For me, just the fact that I'd be able to obtain a work permit here in Vietnam with this degree almost makes it worthwhile (it's been confirmed that it's sufficient). Of course, I'm looking into other countries as well, as I don't want to stay here forever. I've heard that I'd have few problems working in the Middle East with the MA TESOL. I was even PM'd about someone having success in Canada with just the degree (and some uni experience in Asia). By the sounds of it, this degree doesn't seem that useful in Japan from a hiring standpoint - unless of course there's a lot more to back it up.
A bit disturbing that having such a degree could actually HINDER my chances at a language center. Perhaps the ALT route might still be an option though (though you brought some valid points to my attention regarding the potential hassle of hiring someone in my position). I'd be interested in finding out more information about this. I'd really just like to work in Japan for a year or two, even if I were to just put away a few hundred a month (heck....even a few hundred yen would suffice )
While this degree is a bit pricey, it's costs roughly half the amount of money as a full Athabasca degree - not to mention takes far less time to complete. Athabasca offers distance classes, which I was chipping away at SLOWLY while here in Vietnam. I can also continue working (even in Vietnam!) while doing this degree as well, despite the fact that it's on campus (equating to very few in-class lectures).
I'm enjoying teaching at the moment, and don't have any other career aspirations in the near future - for better or worse.
Anyways I might be repeating myself, which is easy to do considering all of my previous posts on the subject.
sabina - thanks for the reply. You sound pretty certain, but just to make sure, is the E-2 the only working visa that one is able to get for teaching? I seem to remember (vaguely) someone in the past mentioning that I might have a chance at uni level work, but NOT language center work. |

| I don't know if I agree with taikibansei about your chances of landing an ALT job. You are qualified for the visa, have experience teaching in an Asian country, and have an MA. |
Glenski, normally I'd agree with this, but as you know, the dispatch company (had to chuckle at the idea of simply contacting schools and getting a direct hire) will have to fill out and submit a form with his full academic background written out in Japanese. As he will have an MA but no BA--something almost unheard of in Japan--the circumstances will need to be explained...by the dispatch company. Not insurmountable by any means, but will they want to do this (when they have so many other applicants applying for each opening)? Again, I'd argue no...unless it was for a particularly hard-to-fill position. |
I'll respectfully agree to disagree on this one. Having never worked for a dispatch company, I can't say with any surety either way, but my feeling is that any explanation would be a minor thing to provide, and if they felt a candidate was otherwise well qualified, it is only in their interests to do it.

| Oh one more thing: don't some school like to post their teachers qualifications? Wouldn't having a teacher with an MA TESOL be an advantage just for this sake? |
Almost all universities in Japan now do this. |
Many language schools (eikaiwa) do this, too. Mine did. Name, home country, age, hobbies, and academic degree were in the commercial literature to sell classes to students.

| I know that most potential uni employers require you to write your BA degree as well as your MA degree on their application forms though. I am unsure sure how much they care if a BA is not there as long as the MA is there. |
It would need to satisfy not just the department itself but the full faculty kyoujukai as well. I.e., even if we (as the department) loved the OP's application and wanted to hire him, one of us would need to stand up in front of over 80 other faculty and explain/defend our hiring of a guy without a BA (but with an MA). Impossible? Heck, no! However, the rest of his application better be stellar |
I agree with that wholeheartedly!

Depends on many factors, not the least of which is how the employer views "uni experience in Asia". Some Asian unis are considered of far lesser quality than others. |
