I think qahiri's post mostly talked about what s/he felt was decent pay for a laid back job. We don't know his/her classroom performance. Let's hope that the students get their due...

too true, yorks lad, & i'm amongst the teachers who care. but you probably know that most tesol institutions do not. so i'd rather be in a place that doesn't get in the way. i can do whatever i want in the classroom, & as long as my students are learning- and they are learning in fact- i don't want to be unnecessarily bothered. i love my job, so i'm happy to be free to do it unencumbered by formalities that have nothing to do with it. this is a rare opportunity that i'm loathe to leave, but all the same i know i'm going to because i can't stay around such low administrative & professional standards long-term... |

You know... it's called "stalking" when someone follows another poster around a board to make ridiculous rude comments unrelated to the discussion.

Stalking? You have been posting for 10 years, right?
Anyway, I asked a question to your question...are your lessons good? |

yes, they mostly are. we as a class usually make a genuine effort to learn and improve together and enjoy ourselves in the process. |

Can anyone give valuable and true information regarding College of Applied Science in Ibri??
Do teachers communicate with other teachers in the numerous applied sciences colleges scattered around Oman? |

The college in Ibri is at the exact same level of incompetence as that of the other colleges. Go to work, don't complain, and leave when your time comes. |

Are the "Colleges of Applied Science" in Ibra the same as, for example, the Ibra College of Technology, Ibra? |

No, Colleges of Applied Sciences are under the ministry of education and the colleges of technology are under the ministry of manpower.
Colleges of Applied Science (Sohar, Rustaq, Sur, Nizwa, Salalah, Ibri and Ibra) Agents: Hawthorne (Majali), CbFt and .....?
Colleges of Technology (Muscat, Salalah, Nizwa, Ibri, Ibra, Shinas, Musannah) Globent, Bahwan, CeCn, Tati, Al Nahwa |

Thanks for the clarification.
A few years ago, seemingly all of the Polish higher education institutions having 'Academy' in their titles were relabeled with 'University' in their titles, confusing every employer looking at a CV without the updated name. The 'Academy of Economics' didn't seem to exist in Google's database... raising the question of whether or not to believe the data on the rest of the CV.
I was thinking perhaps the same was true in Oman, that the names were changed en masse in the belief that it would somehow improve the stature of the schools. The Applied Science colleges sound like 'retirement in place'. |

StampLover, I don't think there is a College of Applied Science in Ibra. There is a newly opened Sharqiya University there, though. Anyone know how the olympic diver's getting on?

Chasing money as an entrepreneur gets old after a while, if one lacks wife and kids to provide some sort of stability to one's life.
You wake up in the morning, chase money, have a bit to est, chase money, maybe get some lunch, chase some more, grab some supper, work some more and then wonder why today sucked so bad as you try to fall asleep, exhausted but still staring at the ceiling.
Teaching in a place where some bureaucrat is not breathing down your neck for not capitalizing something (or using all caps, Heaven forbid!) sounds absolutely lovely. And they pay decent as well? Sounds not bad at all.
I like gigs which do not involve:
sleeping in airports
hotels
airport security on a weekly basis
changing language 3x +/day
cafe/bar/restaurant staff staring at you like you are a visitor from Alpha Centauri
suitcases
staff complaining because they have to actually do the job they are paid to do
... I could go on.
Is this one of them?
Client is happy, ergo I am happy. I can only teach; I cannot force them to learn short of harnessing brute force and other forms of physical violence.
Perhaps it is only a fantasy after all... |
