You are going to spend one night, maybe two nights in HK, if you plan well. There are some inexpensive hotels within walking distance of the Chinese visa office. By inexpensive, I mean ~700HKD/night. Nice hotels in the area run into thousands of HKD/night

Unless you are quite good at directions, there is a chance of getting lost in HK. Lost equals wasted time, which you don't have. Better stay near the visa office

Another option is to stay at the *Chunking mansions and take the subway to the visa office. There is a subway stop very near the office. Again, subway, you may get lost.

If you can get an early arriving flight, you should only spend one night in HK. Get an early flight in, an evening flight out the next day.

*Possibility of beheading at the Chunking mansions?

Thank you for your replies. I'll probably be taking a train into Shenzhen - don't have the money to fly. My company only pays for some of the costs...

Can anyone recommend any particularly cheap hostels? It looks like inexpensive accommodation is usually around 700, but does any one know of any other good options, couch surfers hosts, maybe?

chungking and mirador mansions on nathan road are full of guesthouses and restaurants. Before you even get into the building some touts will approach you and ask if you need a room. Most of the guesthouses in these places are ok, a few are more dingy but you can easily get a room for the night for less than HK$200. The Cosmic Guesthouse in Mirador is pretty good. and you can book a room on their website before you arrive.
