My students prefer raw meat, I'm afraid, Spiral. Or tyro teachers - not that there seems to be much distinction there.
Thanks for the replies, folks. Makes for interesting reading. As for my own position, I'm of the opinion that this statement holds little validity - at least the way my students seem to mean it. Some of them, if not all, really seem to believe that they have perfect comprehension, even though they can utter little beyond very simple structures, and usually also with quite dense errors. They normally declare this during a placement test when they are disappointed with the school's decision to put them in a low-level class. Of course there is a difference between receptive and productive skills, but surely not to the extent that is being suggested by the students. |
