Or know it exists....
That's why I have asked my students for a Letter of Recommendation (ie, reference letter). Ok, they don't look to professional, but whose opinion would you value more - a Dean or FAO director who knows nothing about you except for when you complain about something... or the people who actually experienced your teaching style. The ones I got back say they learnt stuff, and enjoyed their classes. |

| That's not so bad idea, although how seriously can such letters be taken by the local employer is the question. Also, it may put teachers in a rather difficult position, if there's a serious academic goal in the program. Just imagine a FT gets 20,30 or 40 students that have been provided by the employer without any evaluation (of the students) and they are to pass some serious exams. The time's set as well as the goal. Seriously, I doubt such evaluation/rec letter from students may work at a professional level. These people/kids out of our classrooms may only be some casual references for us, but correct me if i am wrong. However, agreebly, it's coming to the point where there's virtually nobody that sees what we have come to do here. Should the long term FTs/foreign experts be considered for a larger role in this respect? After all, there's been 30 years of English language learning with FTs in the country. Some of them have been named "experts", haven't they? |

you'll be getting some *beep* looks down at the visa office when
you show your student-provided letter of recommendation |

Absolutely! It's not about what's been said but who has said it.
As sad as it is that this country has opted for such a control of its experts. Beeps that know little about little provide their views of, often qualified and experienced, foreign experts that've come to help the country's poorly educated, in English language, population. FTs' work visa or its extention may and usually does depend on such incompetent individuals.
Hopefully one day, the local PSBs, without any "beep looks", will take succh "LETTERS" and file them under the G file. This is not what really matters to help this, in English language, poorly educated population, is it?
