Would it be a good plan if I rented a sublet for a month while I search an apartment and sort out my jobs ?

TtoT, thanks for the reply. I've now sent a couple of emails to some agencies, yet to hear back from them. I'm going for the weekend in a couple of weeks for about 3 days to go hunt and secure an apartment, hopefully I will get something. Bit anxious doing this all myself!

Don't be surprised to hear nothing back from emails. Once you arrive and start looking you'll soon get a good idea of what you really want. Agents (even small, local ones) will show you high end places that are above your budget because they believe foreigners are demanding and difficult to please, but there's plenty of good stuff for your budget in Futian. You might not get a flatscreen TV or much of a view but you can at least expect a clean kitchen and bathroom for your budget. Be firm!

Watch out for landlords who want you to pay 2 or 3 months at a time (so paying quarterly rather than monthly). It's not suspicious or anything, but it means you have to part with a lot more cash up front.

Ask about the monthly service charge/building management fee. A new, luxury building will have a higher fee per month than an older one. I have 80sqm and I pay about 200 per month on top of my rent.

Try to find out about the "foreigner tax"- some buildings/districts require any foreigners who live there to pay something like 6% of their rent to the local government office each month.

Found a decent place now- 3000/mth in Futian, 10min walk to metro, a couple of supermarkets, banks and other places barely minutes walk away in a nice leafy area. Good landlord who wanted to show me every little nuance of the apartment and where the shops are etc. Management fee is about 100/mth and I did offer to pay 2 months rent first up (not regularly though) as I will be in Australia when July's rent is due.

44m, works for me, though bedroom is a little squishy Confused !
