Hi Jacob,
So it seems like a lot of people here don't think you can speak "conversationally fluent" Turkish in 3 months. That's their opinion, and they are free to say anything they like.
On the other hand, no one here on the forum knows you. Maybe you will be able to progress rapidly in Turkish. People learn at different speeds. Maybe you can turn what people said on this forum into a good thing, i.e., motivation to really accomplish your goal of language learning.
My own Turkish is getting better little by little, too, albeit slowly. It's funny because I think sometimes people think that I understand more than I really do, and they start talking to me quickly and using words I don't know. A part of me is sad I don't understand what they are saying, but a part of me is happy thinking at least they *think* I am good.
Anyway, your original question wasn't, "Can I learn Turkish in 3 months?" Hope you find some good gig that suits you here!
Bonne chance! |

Why are you all spending so much time with such a "cocky" know-it-all backpacker? Let him make his choices, come here, and learn for himself. Who really gives a rats a** anyway? Just what we need, another backpacker. Backpack, flip flops, cheap English/conversation lessons.. etc. Sound familiar?
Good luck to you Jacob TM |

| Just trying to be nice. Might even spare him the inevitable fall he is setting himself up for... Turkish conversations on politics etc. in 3 months! Unless one's Hungarian or Azeri, it simply ain't gonna happen. |

I suspect that you will have a hard time finding students if you are wearing shirts with Kurdish slogans.

You have a BA, CELTA and experience so I assume the teaching aspect of your endeavor will not be difficult for you. However, as someone who studied and lived in Turkey I have some doubts about how well you will get along there.
I studied Turkish as an exchange student and I think your timeline for learning is far too optimistic. Vowel harmony and allglutination will all be very new to you if you have had no previous experience with a language in the Turkic family.
Anyway, it seems to me that in my life that when someone tells me the stove is hot, for some reason I need to touch it and get burnt to confirm what they said. I think you should do what you propose to do and get some valuable life experience. |
