Rogerwilco, you must not be telling us something, unless you have several years of teaching experience in China already, or your school is real hard up for people. Either that or you are teaching high school, middle school, or kindergarten, or you are working in a city with a high cost of living.

Either way, most universities in Shanghai and Guangzhou seem to pay the same amount of 5000-5500.

My guess is that your university probably does not have its own housing, so they give you a stipend. so, they are paying you 5500 + 1500 housing allowance. That, and they are also including a food allowance, which is pretty good, as not all universities do this.

The "secret" was answered by you in your first sentence. I have several years of teaching experience in China.
