The idea of arriving in a foreign place with no contacts or experience and searching like crazy for a job is...."sketchy" in my mind, but is it what people really do?

Yes, it's what people do. It's also the best way to secure employment here. I felt the same way when I arrived as you do now, but once you're here you will see the wisdom of it.

Thanks, that makes me feel better. Do you think I'm going to be able to pull this conquest off with about 1500 USD? I would rather not borrow from mom.

$1,500 is a bit tight, but should be enough. If you get a job soon after you arrive it should definitely be enough. If it takes you a few weeks to a month to find a job..... well, you might need to borrow from mom.

I'd suggest trying to have some interviews lined up before you arrive. It's not as easy to find a job in Taipei as it used to be. If you're willing to go to the countryside, you'll find it much easier.

Good luck!
