Hell is other expats.
As a rule, every school in China which employs a dozen or more foreign teachers must have at least one functional alcoholic or wastrel hippie. This is a charitable service mandated by SAFEA. |

For the first time in a long time, I agree with 7969.
Look:
State school (Zhejiang Jiaxng high school) (+)
20 lessons (40 minutes) (+)
6000 to 7000 RMB (-)
Single accommodation - utilities paid by school. (+)
National holidays + 2 weeks paid. (+/-)
Let;s go through this:
1. State school is a government school. Looks good on a resume, is official, and can be a stepping stone.
2. I'm not doing the math; I hate math. But it looks like you are getting around 100 RMB an hour. Not too bad.. could be better though...
You need a clause for when they start to add extra classes. Make SURE you have a clause for overtime.
BUT...
I still feel the wage is too low. Take it if you have little education.
If you have a degree... a REAL degree... you can command 12k+ a month easy for the same hours. |

Well, I should have an interview set up sometime with a person from the school. They are getting back to me when they speak to their HR person.
Regarding my degree, I have one (History - First Class with honours), though it's not from a 'red brick' our 'ivy league' institution.
EDIT: I've been contacted by a person claiming to be from Ocean University, however their email address appears as '[email protected]' which looks a bit suspicious. Plus, the name on the email says 'Logan Chuang' which I believe is an alias of a person who has a mixed reputation. Am I right in thinking that '[email protected]' is not a university email address. |

We should celebrate it while we can . . . Seriously, I'm glad we agreed for once.

OK, party's over.... RMB100/hr is not bad. and let's remember it's the very same wage many people, incl. Great Wall of Whiner, are earning. |

Yeah, though I still haven't had the interview with the school yet, it's meant to be soon though.
I had an interview with a person who sent me details of three university positions, though they haven't appeared on Skype yet (60 mins late now), but there could be a genuine reason for this. Anyone heard of 'Alex Dong'? That's who I'm meant to be talking to.
Whatever position I accept, I'll let you know.
Out of interest, how long is the normal time before accepting a job offer? |

You are right, it is a QQ email address, just like we might have a Hotmail or Gmail one.
Possibly a recruiter. |

Depends. You mean them or you?
They might want you right away, or they may want you to come at a certain time.
From your angle, you could hold out, but if they are desperate they might get someone else behind your back. |

I could hold out for a long time. I'm fortunate that I'm in a situation where I can stay in the UK as long as I wish, I have pretty much guaranteed work from September (in the UK) if I want it.
I just hand an 'interview' with a person at Huanggang Polytechnic College, any opinions on this? It seemed to go OK, though the talk was with the 'university boss' (sorry I don't know the actual term for his position) and very brief, who just wanted to hear my English, not an actual job interview where I could ask them questions. I have another 'interview' with the person in charge of hiring after the weekend. This was via a recruiter (I'm ready for the 'booos!' but I think I will risk it. I'll tell you in a years time what I really think of them .
I think I will email EF and say thank you for your job offers, but it's not for me. I think I've decided that if the position isn't what I'm 100% comfortable with, I will turn it down.
Thank you all once again, your advice and support has been invaluable. |

You'll run into that a lot. For some reason lots of people just use free email services instead of their work address (if they even have a work one). If you are unsure, google the address. If you google the one you are asking about you'll find it's used for a number of different job ads, meaning it's a recruiter. Also search the school name here/other ESL sites/google.
I've read bad things about one of the ocean universities on this forum, though it was from a few years ago. |

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I don't know how people cope without a forum like this. It really is appreciated that you give 'heads ups' to people not in the know.
A quick update for those who are interested - I've been offered positions with EF (various), probably going to be offered a 'York School' position in Fuzhou as I believe the interview went well. On Monday I have an interview with a state school, in Zhejiang and also with Huanggang Polytechnic College.
Various interviewers have mentioned coming out with a L visa, then swapping to a Z once I'm over there. Now I'm really uncomfortable with this, I would like your opinions. Would anyone accept me (this late in the academic calendar) with the time required for a Z visa? |

It is understandable but still not something which I would like to do.
If I were you, I would try to get some assurances about what would happen if things didn't go as planned. It shouldn't be too hard, something along the lines of "I am aware it is difficult to arrange the paperwork at such short notice but I do need to know what will happen if it is not possible for my L visa to be changed into a Z visa."
Most will probably give you the "don't worry" response, but if any don't, then maybe they would be worth some extra thought.
Having said all of that, the L to Z switch is something which I have not done and will (hopefully) never do. |

That's going to be a problem with public schools. Maybe not so much with private schools. In my experience it takes a month or two to get all the Z visa paperwork organised and mailed. Then you have to mail stuff to the embassy and receive it which may add another week or two to the whole procedure.
If you can get a school to convince you there would be no problems then I guess it's an option you can consider. It's risky though. |

Well, we were in Jiaxing during 07-09 and had a great time. New Walmart, small town (1 million), friendly people, and low cost of living.
The city organized dinners for foreigners at Xmas-they seem to know
how to treat FTs. Still have local and foreign friends there.
Good luck. |

Thanks for the info on Jiaxing.
Just another question - I have been sent an example contract where it says the teacher will be paid in cash - is this usual?
Thanks again. |
