I'm now thinking I would like to start work in January. I could potentially go to Spain at the beginning of Dec to job hunt (and then go home for the holidays). Would it be a big advantage to go at that time to look for a job starting in January, or should I just show up in January to start the in-person job hunt, ready to work right away? |

blue123,
I would suggest that you come in January, after the 6th, which is a holiday, and start knocking on doors and turning in CVs. There should still be a need for teachers in January, so give it a go and see what happens. I can speak for Madrid, and there's always a need for teachers in general.
Happy job hunting,

Have you ever thought about private classes. I certainly prefer them.
You can pick and choose your own hours and students and also negotiate your own prices. Of course there is 'less security', but hey, living on the edge is kind of exciting, jaja. |

Dunno about that, 99% of students who can pay any sort of decent rate have jobs and therefore can only meet after 6pm, very early morning, lunchtime or the weekend. Also in markets like Spain with lots of native speakers it takes a while to build up enough of a local reputation to get enough students. Working in an academy for a year or two is usually a good way to do that, a kind of free advertising. |

Very well put, jonniboy. I know of very few of my friends who are English Instructors who can set their own private schedule before 6pm. There may be a lunchtime class or two, but other than that, they have private classes after their student(s) finish working.
