I TEFLed in Qinghai for 2 years, and am not the only person to have mentioned the area on these boards. I mostly worked with one of the ethnic minorities there, and it was a very positive experience.
I probably wouldn't recommend it to a newbie (specially a job outside of Xining), but for someone who's already comfortable with Chinese people/customs, language and food, and is happy without finding breakfast cereals from "home" at the local supermarket, then it's a great way to expand your horizons.
BTW, had a jeck of a lot more hassle with internet access in rural Australia than I did even in Maduo or Qingshuihe! |

| So we've heard from people who've worked in Gansu, Jianxi and Qinghai. Is there really no one on this board who has worked in Ningxia, Taiwan or Guizhou? Would like to heard from people who have worked in all of the provinces! |

I agree with you, the place is definitely dead. However it might be ok for older people. I know some who like living there, but they are around sixty.
But I must be fair and say that it is changing and getting modernized really fast, so... who knows what it is going to look like in a couple of years. |

I've noticed that there are certain provinces you don't often see mentioned on the China ESL boards. I guess it's because they don't have larger cities or aren't economically developed. I'm interested in what it's like to work in these places. Has anyone spent time in the following? Please share your experiences!
Ningxia
Qinghai
Jiangxi
Taiwan
Gansu
Guizhou |
I have virutally never seen job ads for Hainan, which is a shame since it's a tropical island. Fortunately, I solved this problem by working in Taiwan, another tropical island that also speaks Chinese AND pays better.
And where are the job ads for Tibet? |

| This is a ridiculous list. Why would you put Taiwan in there? It is a densely populated province, with 23 million people. |

True. And a few people would take issue with calling Taiwan "a province." Though to be honest, these days, with a KMT President and Pan-Blue Coalition (which is in power) emphasizing that Taiwan is part of China, the ECFA, etc. and the PRC emphasizing the same thing, it seems that both governments have agreed that Taiwan is part of China... They just can't seem to agree how much power the Beijing government should have over Taiwan, that's all.
But what's really ludicrous is saying that there are hardly any teaching jobs in Taiwan. There are a ton! Thousands! Granted, competition for a given job is much higher than in mainland China, but still... |

My brother worked in Guizhou... He worked in Guiyang and got worked like a dog. Didn't sound great. But obviously not all schools there are the same! |

One reason for the western provinces not mentioned is that compared to
the coastal provinces they are the poorest of the cousins in the Chinese
family. They are the "third world" where the coastal provinces are the
"1st world".
Thus China has a long way to go if this economic miracle is to be shared
all over the country. The disparities in these areas are the big head
aches of the policy makers. I am sure they are scratching their heads
whenever the topic surfaces. |

Taiwan has its own very active forum. Experiences there are classed as "off topic" on the main China board. |
