It alarms me when I see how central TV has become to the mass of people in Britain. Their lives revolve around what is on the idiot box.
1984 all came true ! Thank the Lord that I have had the luck to escape and now live in the sanity of KSA !
Quack ! Quack ! ( I know I am not really a duck, but it is nice to pretend !) |

That's right, Scot. But as a consequence the books suffer. It is a fact that people read less these days in Great Britain. What a shame when you look at the literary talent this nation has produced!
I remember reading something once about a hypothetical alien invasion. It said that if the aliens were unfortunate enough to land in GB between the hours of 19:00 and 22:00GMT then they would be amazed to find 90%+ of the population fixated on these strange glowing boxes in the rooms in their houses.
What we've remarked on here is that the majority of those glowing boxes would be showing the latest episode of Big Brother 206, 'I'm a celebrity t wat and don't get me out of here because I love the attention' and any other contrived nonsense which is a complete misnomer for the term 'Reality TV'.
Oh, I can't wait to get out of this country! Recently, I've even contemplated going to teach in KSA/UAE/Qatar just to escape this circus! Scot, stay put ... this place is getting worse.

"Decline of the West"
Untergang des Abendlandes.
Spengler was right.
To my surproise the demonstrations in Bahrain against Big Brother in an Arabic version worked. The TV company in Bahrain was forced to scrap it.
Maybe I should sign up with the bearded Islamists ? |

| To revolt against Big Brother in this country is to admit clinical insanity ... it appears. |

I shouldn't let it raise your blood pressure, Scot, unless you're unfortunate enough to be living in the UK (which you patently are not) and the people whose lives are dependent on the next episode of Eastenders are voting in the same elections as you. Most of the indigents of the Septic Isle are beyond saving, in the sense of having a tangible sense of reality restored to them, and instead are content to wallow in the mire of celebrity swill, whilst gorging on cheap credit and congratulating themselves with the fact that their jerry-built hovel in the Burbclave is worth 20 grand more this week than it was last week. Britain in the 21st century is truly Fantasy Island. They should make it one giant Theme Park (although Zoo would be a more accurate description in most of the towns and cities).

Huxley's Brave New World is probably a more accurate metaphor, in that television is seen as an extension of 'soma'.
As for the Vegas idea itself, I think it's safe to assume that the TV company paid him more than he stood to lose, and the fact that a follow-on programme resulted from his winning does seem a tad convenient. I had the same idea myself as posted in another thread but that involved the gratuitous use of credit cards rather than one's own money.

Of course some people (eg "boywonder") cannot wait to get back to the land of Reality TV and the News of the World.
And remember the joys of being in a town centre in Britain at the weekend when the pubs vomit out their hundreds of drunk feral youth - male and female. |

I don't understand gambling at all. Why waste perfectly good money? When I was working at my local grocery store, it was shocking how many not-so-well-off people came in and bought sheets of scratch and win cards everyday.
If you have money, isn't it smarter just to save it? You could just as easily invest in the stock market and have a great chance of making a little profit.
The only way I could understand it, if adults played slot machines like children play arcade games. |
