| I used 'Couch Surfing' to find people in the city I was going to work. Met another teacher on there, we met up when I arrived and we've been in contact ever since. |

There are some ways to check out possiblities before you arrive somewhere and they've pretty much been covered.
When you decide on a location, do some research into whatever English speaking facilities are available before you arrive e.g., English language bookshops, maybe cafes, specific food shops. You'll often find, especially in smaller cities, that those kinds of places have notice boards with local expat get togethers, accom information &part time jobs. In one place I lived, a local food store offering British made goods (yes, cadbury milk chocolate bars and marmite among other things!) had all sorts of notice boards. There were notices for flats and even part time jobs. They also rented out English DVDs and books I think - sort of like a library.
Anyway, that kind of thing is really only possible to check out once you're on the spot and in the place you planned to be, but you can still do some searches for this sort of thing before you leave home so that you have addresses and maps, if possible |

Forums have worked for me, I've met people from Dave's, MOD EDIT expatperu, livinginperu, and another forum for parents in Korea.
Meeting peopel who you meet online can be dangerous, so just be careful. But when you're meeting mainly women with kids at a kids' cafe or soemthing, it's less dangerous.
TEFL events or conferences are also good.
Dave's has been great. I had a layover a couple years ago and meet two posters. I finally met a poster who was in Ecuador while I was in Peru when we both came to Korea.
meetup is also good. Facebook as well.
With social media, it's pretty easy, so
1. Forums
2. meetup
3. Facebook |
