I read Zen and Lila a few years back.
Zen impressed me more, partly because there was actually a story. It's true that all the philsophy in the book can be found in a footnote in one of Plato's works, but the delivery is just close enough to the real world for 'ordinary' people to consider reading it, and become interested in thinking about the world in a philosophical way. And that's a good thing, right?
The most interesting part of Zen, I thought, was when he is analysing an argument between two of his biker friends - where he can understand both of their points of view - it makes it very clear that a lot of conflict is simply misunderstanding.
Finally, when was it ever a bad thing to read a book? |

Mark-O`s question: "Why is this such a celebrated book?"
My answer; "Timing".
Why was Coupland`s Generation X such a big seller? Timing. 20 years from now generation z, triple x, y fronts or whatever the catchy label is for them will ask the same question about why Generation X was such a big seller. It had an audience that thought the message meant something to them at that time. It is still the same message, but the times have changed and many people`s views have changed. Although, some novels are timeless. I won`t start a list, as I will probably be massacred. |
