Dear Dirt Guy,
It all depends on where you work there. At the IPA, I found that in my classes, there was the usual breakdown - one that I suspect in nearly universal: 10% - very good to excellent; 80% - on a sliding scale from good to poor; 10% hopeless.
Regards,

Any suggestions as to how to build rapport with Arab students?
Thanks.

Have a sense of humor, don't take yourself too seriously while balancing that with dignity, put on a good show of knowing everything about English (they especially like grammar formulas) and respect each student as an individual. And for heaven's sake, don't drone at them all day and don't go on about yourself for hours. Have conversations, even occasional time-outs for irrelevant topics like cars and--yes--women (assuming an all-male class and the topic is treated lightly). |

Dear B4,
Sounds like very good advice to me. I'd just add - don't try to be "popular" by "helping" students with their grades, and don't accept "favors" from students (there's no such thing as a "free" favor).
Treat them as adults (even if/when they don't act that way), and respect their beliefs (especially when you don't agree with them).
Regards,
John |

Take care that the women discussed are not local women. Do not even lightly refer to sisters or mothers.

after many years in saudi I find you have to consider 2 things:
1. Does the administration back up its attendance policy and not allow for students to brown nose for grades?
2. if the above is true, then be cordial with students but firm and smile alot.
if #1 is not true, then take the first three weeks from a drill sargeant perspective. do not smile or give them a reason to believe you are a friend they can manipulate. after 3 weeks, ease up on the strictness a tad and smile occasionally etc. in those first three weeks keep them extremely busy. no dead time. they havent had much discipline at home or in their schools. when they work hard(and some do) reward them. they dont work hard: keep them busy. |
