Qurum Vets and one or two other reputable places have boarding facilities for dogs and cats. Try to use Qurum if you need to, or let them help you find facilities. By no means use any of the pet shop services. Hope that helps.
Also, I must say to those thinking about bringing dogs to Oman, it's not so bad. Muscat by far is the best place, more expats and Omanis exposed to pets. I lived in Sohar at first, this was no haven for pets. No one bothered the dogs the few times I took them out, but there was nowhere to go. Muscat is a lot better, I have been even able to take them to outdoor cafes and coffee shops in Shatti. I walk them on Qurum beach at night, its cooler, and have been surprised to find that many Omanis want to pet and greet them. In all fairness they are small dogs, Beagle and Shih Tzu, and non threatening. The services in Musat, include a new pet sitting servie, which though pricey is great and reliable, pet shop groomers, who do a great job, and even obedience classes in Madinat Sultan Qaboos. People oooh and aaah when I take them out, and I have to say I have had no negative experiences thus far. In the interior and other places in the Sultanate I'm sure the situation could be muh different. |

Qurum Vet is fantastic... However they tend not to board dogs because of complaints from the neighbors about too much barking. They do board cats but they get full pretty quick. They give you the contact information for Pet Care Boarding Kennels and Cattery which is located behind the AL Harthy complex (the building next to Sultan Centre) in Qurum.... Bookings are made by appointment only through 95204228...
I have been to see the kennels. They are air conditioned and the dogs are taken for a walk once a day in a small yard but they are like cement cells and I didn't want my dog there for a month so I decided to pay my cleaner to look after my dog and cats in my house for the summer... Worked out great and he looks after them whenever we go away now... |

I was there last week and they do board dogs. They do fill up quickly, as you said. |

How much does it cost for pet boarding? Do you have to bring your own food? Do they keep the dogs and cats right near each other? |

Hi there,
I don't want to argue newbienicki but I have just phoned Qurum Vet to see if their policy had changed and the person on the phone firmly stated that they do not board dogs... They only board cats. They do however give you contact information for boarding dogs at other places.
Their number is 00968 245 62263 if anyone who is not sure who to believe would like to phone and confirm for themselves. Perhaps there are two Qurum vets but the one I have been going to does not board dogs. They only keep them if they are under treatment and the dogs are medicated so they tend to be quiet.
Expat 101 last time I checked (which was around the end of last year) it cost OMR5 per pet per day at the pet car boarding place behind the Al Harthy Complex. The cats are completely separate from the dogs and yes you do have to provide your own food.

Point made Lizzie, they do not board dogs. Thanks for doing the leg work needed to confirm. The number to the vet was also helpful, but I wasn't trying to get into a spitting match (who to believe match) with you. I asked when I took my dogs in last week and I must have misunderstood. You win. |

I didn't think you were because in the same sentence you later agreed that the place fills up quickly
Yes, good to have the number available for everyone
Lizzie
P.S Wish they did board because I prefer their facilities to the cement warehouse that the have in the boarding facility I mentioned... |

|
|
During the evenings we explore old sites, climb rocks, on the weekends its to the wadis or the ocean. He has had his photo taken 1,000's of times, been kissed by Omanis (few but some), the landlord of the apt I was in asked me to return with one for his daughter.
The Expaits are more freaked out about my dog than the oman people. They are always warning me about the Islamic culture and dogs but the Oman people seem to ignore that part of their "culture". Of course I am very careful by not letting my dog go up to any strangers until invited, keeping him close when strangers are around and he is very well trained.
He does not bark inside unless playing and wait patiently all day for me to come home, then it is running and exercise as soon as it cools off in the evening.
I imagine if you care enough to go through the trouble to travel with your dog your dog is most likely well behaved and educated. Maybe he/she even as her own PHD degree?
Don't worry if your dog is well behaved, bring it get the rabies shot just before you leave home, get the ag paper from Muscat and you will find it isn't that bad. Key is good behavior and keeping it exercised in the coolest part of the day. I'm happy to help you anyway that I can. Just PM me. |

Hey there,
Just have to thow in a quick word of disagreement with thegoodprofessor. First of all, I am so happy that you have had a good experience with your dog in oman, thats great to hear. However, I feel like your experience may be the exception rather than the rule. And you are correct, that we, as dog owners have to be careful and aware of our surroundings.
A few Omani's have pet my dog but most will not. People have thrown rocks, and barked at my small maltese. OFten times, people will try to get my dog riled up.
And worst of all, someone actually shot (yes shot) one of my bigger dogs. The bullet went through his neck and came out the other side of his chest. It was not a bb gun. It was actual high powered weapon that someone used to assualt my dog. Now, with this being said, he did get out of my gate the night it happened, so there is that.
I think people should absolutely bring their dogs, to help expose this culture to civilized, decent dogs, but just be aware of the ignorance that you will face. |

In Muscat the there is a special division dedicated to shooting wadi dogs in order to control the population as there have been complaints of wadi dog attacks. I have seen people's little dogs in the vet because they have been attacked by a pack of wadi dogs. Perhaps they thought your dog was one of the wadi dogs omaneditor?
We have a wadi dog and we have faced problems in the small town we live in. In fact the neighborhood kids used to throw rocks and sticks at her when I took her out for a walk (I had to go and speak to their parents who didn't understand English but I got my point across) and kids bark out the windows and chase after her barking... She used to be scared so they just continued acting like that but then one day she barked and growled at them and they are too scared to go near her now...
Oman is not the best place to keep dogs... Perhaps if they are small and cute like the good professor's dog it is ok but wadi dogs and big dogs are not looked on as kindly... |
