You might want to post this question in the China forum. Most countries will not issue a work visa without a college degree, I think. If memory serves, China is a bit funky on that, and the last thing I'd want is to work with a funky immigration system.

What's the rush anyway in getting a degree? Being 27/28 is not ancient. Many of us started out far older than that.

I hate living in New Jersey, I can't afford to study out of state or abroad, and don't want to become severely in debt. I also have that wanderlust urge that makes me want to get out ASAP, and I also have the feeling that the longer I avoid doing TEFL the greater the likelihood that I will never do it, and then I will live with regrets.

I don't think 27/28 is all that old either, I just don't want to wait. It is a cumulation of factors really.

But perhaps I will take up your advice and relay my question over at the China forum.

Hmmm...that does sound like a good deal. Perhaps a good idea would be to earn some money here at home, enough to cover some living expenses and this entire degree, and then begin working at it while I am abroad. Is this feasible? Do you have to pay for the degree all at once up front, or is there some sort of payment plan?

What are the time constraints like teaching abroad? I am sure if I had the money for the degree ahead of time I could squeeze in the hours required to complete the courses, especially if it were on a part time basis.

Yes, that's feasible. http://www.londoninternational.ac.uk/study_ep/costs/index.shtml will tell you all you need to know about payment.

I did the two year full-time graduate entry route whilst teaching full-time. It is doable.

I havent read all the other posts in this thread, but wanted to contribute as I pretty much did what you now hope to do. I started my degree via distance learning with the Open University in 2008, which coincided with my first paid job in China. I completed the first 120 academic points of my 300 point degree while working in China, and my job there offered ample time to study, and ample salary for me to live on during that time.

It wasnt practical for me to complete the whole degree in China though, so I did return home to complete my courses, again via distance learning.

I didnt stop teaching though ... I worked summer schools, temporary/short term teaching jobs, online teaching jobs and exam invigilation in local state schools when I was back home. I didnt give up the TEFL 'dream'.

It can be done. Probably wise to save as much as you can before starting though. I made a lot of sacrifices in my time studying so having a little nest eg before helped me. It would be harder for me to do know though, UK education costs have increased a lot in the last few years so I dont really know how feasible it would be now.
