Ok, no one knows about Barcelona it seems. Back to Madrid and more inane questions I'm afraid. For personal reasons I may not be able to go to Madrid till January, not the more ideal September. Do you think I'd still be able to find enough work? |

Does anyone know if the situation is similar in Barcelona? Barcelona appeals also. However, I did want to pick up Spanish and i hear htta they mainly speak Catalan in Barcelona. Is that true? |
Sure, locals speak Catalan in Barna among themselves, but you'll have no problem practicing your Spanish all the same. However, speaking as someone who moved to Spain pretty much exclusively out of a desire to learn Spanish well and didn't care where he ended up in the territory, I think that it definitely helps living in a city where almost all of the written language in the street is the target language that you want to learn. I believe this is an underrated and often completely ignored aspect of immersion where continually seeing the language written all around you undeniably has an effect on reinforcing the basic vocabulary that you need. I have also now realised that by giving private classes to young learners (across all levels from 1 primaria to 2 bachillerato) I have learnt a tonne of vocabulary by memorising what my students were learning in their classes.
However, the most important thing is to be somewhere you like, whether it's Barcelona or Burgos. Unless you're on the guiri coast stuck in some tiny town with retired Brits and Germans in Alicante, you'll find no dearth of chances to practice your Spanish. My two limited experiences in Barcelona tell me you'll have no problem finding people to speak with. |

I think that you should be able to find work in January. Many academies have classes that start up then and are still looking for teachers. The only way to really find out is to apply and give it a go. Keep an eye on websites that post jobs and as soon as you are in Madrid, hit the ground running by going to academies, personally, and handing in your CV. That way they can put a name to the face.
It's all about selling yourself and your qualifications as well.
Suerte,
