From what my BOE here in Shizuoka prefecture said, they're going to cut a 'sougou' (integrated studies?) class to make room for the extra English lesson.

That's basically studyhall. Which will suck to cut. As most kids will have to do their homework and studying at home. But a lot of kids simply don't have the time to study much at home. This will effectively eliminate half their study time. Another bad bureaucratic decision, full of good intentions, but with disastrous results.

Yes, because we all know, the US concept of "Study hall" has served the US so well and helps keep the US public school system at the top of the world, as opposed to languishing at bottom of the OECD rankings....

....oh, wait.... Confused

Nice troll job. Not really the same situation at all. As Japanese kids have much less free time to study. Which is what the loss of study hall in Japan will cut into, student's study time.

Study hall isn't as common as you'd think in the US. I have never been in an area that had it. I was also in one of the top 10 school systems in the US at the time.

Do you have any sources for that claim, or is it just based on "when I was at school"? (And I'm being serious there too: do you have any citations for that or not?)

Which still puts you in the bottom 25% of the OECD. Sorry, but the reality is that schools in the US perform poorly when compared globally. If Study Hall helps then it's not helping much. If study hall doesn't help then your point viz Japan holds no weight. Either way, your original claim is tenuous at best and empty at worst. Moreover, you say that study hall is not the same thing because Japanese kids have less time to study. But you don't provide any evidence or context. You just assert it and leave it. Are you talking about study hall time? Time outside school? What? *You're* busy making the claims so it's your job to back those claims up when called on it.

I am talking about this http://www.educationworld.com/a_admin/admin/admin347.shtml
But if SH isn't treated as a serious enviro then it is pointless, here http://www.redorbit.com/news/education/484164/pssst_study_hall_is_so_old_school/
A bit old, but it does show how little free time Japanese students have. http://spice.stanford.edu/docs/142

The US does do pretty poorly, but there is def a reason for that. One that is best undebated on this forum. Can't find any real info on study halls in the US, as most the info on it, seems to be about town meetings. Will try, but can't promise anything.
