The bit about them taking money off the rent may well be true. I searched for my place online and found it was quite a bit cheaper than what I was paying each month (to Heart, not Interac), but then again they could always argue that they have to recoup the setup costs. I didn't pay anything when I moved in.
The other main inconvenience with having a company-rented apartment is that it's likely to finish the same day your contract finishes. Which means you might find yourself at school all day, and then having one evening to get your stuff moved out and moved in somewhere else. You might be able to pay to stay a bit longer, but you certainly wouldn't be able to if there are any problems and you have to leave the company before the end of your contract. |

| Basically, as soon as you can find out your location, it's best to start looking asap. Interac is gonna force you into a LeoPalace (or something like that) if you don't have a place of your own. I don't know if it's true or not, but I heard they are making money off of their connection with LeoPalace. So it's all the more reason they want to stick you into one of those places. |
Not only will it be a LP, but it has been said that Inerac takes a bit off the rent. Which is why even for LP, the rents seem a tad higher than they should. Maybe it's true, maybe not. But it's best to find your own place. As you may want a short commute, or a long one and be near your places/things of interest. Or near you second job |
Not all of Interac's apartments are LP. The other big one they do is Daito Kentaku, which are like LPs. Its likely that the "rent trimming" probably happens depending on the branch. I've heard that generally as you move away from Tokyo the branches get progressively worse and more problem-ridden.
As to the OPs concerns. Do realize that there is a possibility that you may not know your placement till like 2-3 weeks before you have to leave. If you are lucky you might have 3-4 weeks. Even then, you will have to likely come early, say a week or two before orientation and set up the apartment. I haven't looked closely at sakura-houses or similar guesthouses, but if you live away from the city, which Interac does in fact have a lot of rural placements, you may not have the option of a guest house....just something to keep in mind. There will probably be a hotel or ryokan in the area you could stay at though. If you luck out though and end up in the city though then you are probably in a better situation.
One last thing. If you are coming for an April start, realize that in the major cities, many apartments have been snatched up due to college students and new employees moving into the city. So finding a decent place might be a little difficult. If you are coming in July/August, you still have time to consider it. Interac is also great because they will serve as your gurantor, no problem. |
