Why are you so interested about the location? Why does that matter so much to you? Giving location details would not help anything...it would only put me in danger of divulging my identity.
If you mean, do I want to know where you wanted to be placed, the answer is no. You are the one who complained about locations. All I asked was what the employer promised vs. what you requested.

If they are reading this, they already know who you are. You don't have to say where, just what.

Not necessarily, but let's move on.

I came to this site to ask about visas and finding other options...not to explain details. I'm already past that. What has happened cannot be changed. I'm looking for a solution.
I gave you 3. There really aren't any others unless you just bail out and head for parts unknown outside Japan.

I'm on an instructor visa...of course. I think I mentioned in my first post that it is an ALT position
You described some sort of bizarre E for Instructor visa, and never explained what that E meant. Ok, it's a regular ole instructor visa. Cool.

We don't use the words "academy job" here. Do you mean eikaiwa (conversation school)?

... what are the steps I need to take in order to change my visa to a humanities visa? Leave the country? Get some letter of release from this current company? If I do resign, does my visa get revoked? Etc.
To change, it's like getting any visa in the very first place.
    1. You need to be hired by an employer who is willing to sponsor the visa.
    2. You get the paperwork from him and you, and go to immigration. The forms and instructions are here:
    http://www.immi-moj.go.jp/english/tetuduki/kanri/shyorui/02.html
    3. Wait. Takes 2 weeks to eternity. That means it's case by case.
    4. Once you do that, you take your alien registration card and passport to the ward office and get the card updated. You have 2 weeks to do this.

No, you do not have to leave the country. That was in the old days.
You might need the letter of release, might not. Get it anyway (although I can guarantee your employer will be ticked off at such short length of stay).
No, when you resign, you retain your visa until it expires or until you change it.

Thanks for the visa information.

I've never been one to give up on something, so I think it's best to just go with it, get a year under my belt, and then move on. No need to whine about it. I'm just really disappointed at how unprofessional this company has been so far. I do like the food, though!

I will keep the visa advice in mind. Thanks for the help.

I am sorry to hear that this company has been behaving unprofessionally towards you (but that happens, even in Japan, a very organized and generally rule-obeying country). No matter what, I would not risk any potential difficulties with Japanese immigration, though. Try to solve this issue asap and good luck.

I need advice on finding a different job and the visa situation I will have to deal with.

I'm interested to know which company was able to place you in a high school when you have no experience with that age group. I would love to get placed in a high school Sad But all positions I see are just for elementary and/or junior high. I'll take your job, if you don't want it anymore!!!

Tongue-in-cheek envy aside, you can just give whatever period of notice is required by your employer and quit, if you really can't stand it. But, unless the school itself is a terrible place, the benefits of completing the position far outweigh getting over the annoyance you are feeling toward the company that, as far as you're concerned, brought you here under false pretenses....

You're not having salary problems, which is great.

Now, about being far from your family, I do not think the company will comply with a transfer request because they have promised the Board of Education and that school that they would get someone to work there. Going back on that will f--- them royally if they want to keep the contract with that city. In other words, you cannot be transferred, no way. I doubt they have a school that is lacking an ALT (they should have filled all positions by now!) that they can transfer you to. If you want to be near your family that badly, quit your job, move to THAT city, and start searching for employment again from there.

As others have said, your visa is yours. They cannot take it away from you.

<edit>

Ooops, I just noticed you posted about a month ago. What did you decide to do in the end??

Problem is some employers ask for an unreasonable amount of notice, sometimes 3 months!

Thanks. Everything has worked itself out. Things are getting much better. My school is pretty nice. Students are great. I still have a bad taste in my mouth from that poor excuse of an orientation, but things are improving.
