Dear spiral78,
Well, in academia, at least, according to Wiki, letters of intent, statements of purpose seem to be "identical
"In academia, a letter of intent is part of the application process in which it is also known as a statement of purpose or application essay."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Letter_of_intent
This offers some good general suggeestions. The first 15 slides deal with CVs; letters of Intent begin on slide 16.

for all intents and purposes, anyway

Dear John:
Thanks for the official clarification. I was intending to identify the purpose of each term to help facilitate my students in their writing.
Best,

| I have always associated Statements of Intent with applications for grants, from an Arts Council, for example. Like the one I wrote for a monument to Marx in London. |
