Dear cmp45,

Beau Brummell that I am, I always went home with pretty empty suitcases, bought my clothes at only the most fashionable stores (e.g. Sears, K-Mart,
J.C. Penny Very Happy) and brought them back with me.

Regards,
John

John, It doesn't really matter where one shops or one's taste...at least people that 'try' to dress appropriately /decently and know when to chuck something out and replace it with something new... when it's looking old and tired and worn out! ( Remember: Were talking clothes here!!!!)
LOL I mostly shop at upscale clothing shops as they tend to have better quality which lasts longer and looks better ...Wink at least here in KSA one can also get decent tailor made clothes relatively cheap that also looks decent.

Not expecting teachers to match that of a CEO Fortune 500 company... Laughing

It is important to be aware that many "expats" in KSA develop obsessions with NOT spending money. You can read or hear the semi-humorous entries about "The Fraternity of the The 500". This humour hides the psychopathology of those who have become obsesive misers.....

take catre !

Well, a colleague is forever going on about the $1000 suits his mother bought him and he looks like a prize pillock. When he was infested by bed bugs and fleas (the Bangladeshi cleaner refused to even go in his flat) a Jordanian colleague told him to burn the suits but he foisted them onto some unfortunate laundry guy instead.

Get over to Marks and Spencers - the Jewish haberdashers - in Bahrain for a quality clothing splurge (as well as steak and kidney pies) and when the students compliment you on your fine attire, make sure you tell them where they're from.

I'm not sure what your point is... there are Marks and Spencers in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, the UAE, and all over Saudi Arabia. Are your students supposed to be upset that they are Jewish?

The main point is spend a little on reasonable clothes Very Happy Threadbare backpackers don't quite exude the teaching staff aura to which we may aspire! Surprised
Don't forget that clean, well-mantained shoes can send a positive message, too. Spend a bit more on them , then they'll not only look good but feel comfortable as well.

Yes, and Marks & Spencers failed in North America because they were too old-fashioned and boring. Think I'm making that up? Do a financial Google search.

The nearest M&S to posh's domicile, Jubail, is Bahrain. M&S failed in the US because they couldn't stock enough XXXLs in outlandish colours that Europeans wouldn't be seen dead in.

I was in the Oman and Kuwait stores and never bought anything... mainly because I found nothing I liked. But then why pay high prices when this part of the world is filled with skilled tailors.

But... that doesn't really answer my question... what does "Jewish" have to do with it?

Speaking of Jewish haberdashers - have a wander around Bab Al Bahrain in Manama. Hooda Fashions is run by a Bahraini Jewish family. You can have a suit made there and at a fraction of the price of M&S. Drop that one to the students for raised eyebrows.

It doesn't make sense that so many teachers here are poorly dressed. There isn't much to do here beyond shopping. I've worked a little recreational shopping into my budget and I'm still managing to save a decent amount.
