Hi All,
Does anyone know if there will be an issue with myself having a BS degree instead of the BA that is require to obtain a teaching job? Or it doesn't really matter, as long as I have some sort of degree to pair with the CELTA cert.?

| ^ All you need is a degree. BA or BS does not matter. An accredited degree. |

There is a thread on here discussing the CELTA available in HCMC. I know some people who took the ILA CELTA and were satisfied with it, however I know some posters had a bad experience with it. There's also Apollo that runs a CELTA. Have a look through for the thread, check it out, but also do your own research on it.
As for the jitters... experience was the best way for me to deal with it. Do your best to relax and remember that the people there also want you to succeed. You won't have hecklers or anything like that to deal with it!

I heard some horror stories about the ILA CELTA instructors. In fact, they did sound a bit like hecklers. I don't know how true the rumors are, but I heard from several people that the instructors seemed to be trying to humiliate the students...
I'd go with Apollo based on rumors alone.  |

Hi Teachers
There are only two schools who offer the CELTA in HCMC Apollo and ILA.
I suggest doing your own research as Dekadan stated-common sense. But if you are in HCMC, part of the research should include visiting both schools.
You can speak to the CELTA trainers but can also see the facilities that both schools offer. Based on the facilities, ILA would be selected. But if you are a Viet Kieu, I would ask whether they employ VK who have the CELTA because if they do, you may have a better chance of getting a job there if you take the CELTA at that school. Best to ask a teacher who is working there because both schools will probably say yes and it may or may not be true.

Heh, the students or the other teacher-learners! I recommend learning to read the crowd: do they have their arms folded? Are they wearing sullen expressions? Did they bring bags of moldering vegetables that may serve as projectiles? If yes to any of these, you need to be on your guard! 
As Expat Luke mentioned, I did hear some negative things about the tutors at ILA, but they came from one source: this forum. If I recall correctly, it came from a reputable poster who usually gives good advice, however this is countered by my experience of knowing people who took the course and were happy with it. I never heard them say a bad word about it, though I don't recall them gushing with compliments either. Take that for what it's worth: some anonymous poster from who-knows-where on an internet forum! |

I had quite a file on all these providers about 10 months ago. In this landscape, that could be ancient history. The most damning info I had (other than my own first hand experience) was from TESOL instructors who personally knew and hobnobbed with the ILA instructors. The second hand quote from them was "if half the class has not broken down crying, it was not a successful program."
Still, it is also well documented what to expect at TEFL I, which seems best only for someone who does not need the higher perceived (and certainly real) quality of a CELTA. One of the paradoxes of ESL here is that the schools mostly do not seem to know about this difference, or care. So this makes the decision as to which one to take more difficult. If only working in VN, the TEFL I is likely sufficient to get you hired at any level, assuming you have the real skills required. If going to another country, the TEFL I cert might be substantially discounted.
I suspect that ILA has the highest quality program in HCMC, in other words, marginally superior to Apollo's, and far superior to the TEFL I program. I am rather certain Apollo treats the students with more respect. I imagine either certificate gets almost the same respect here (not certain, but think that in almost all cases it will be pretty much the same).
With reference to comments on ILA not hiring VK or people who went thru another program, or whatever, I think we all have to accept the fact that there is blatant discrimination going on in this country, far more than we are used to. Some of this works to our advantage too, some of it does not. I think we just have to accept this may be going on in any of these schools (or any of our interactions). We may not like it, but we do have to understand it is there and there is really not much we can do about it other than accept it, like they do. I don't know how many times I have had girls tell me about not getting jobs because of not being tall enough or pretty enough. This is just their system. Ours does the same kind of thing, just not as blatantly or pervasively. |
