How about sitting her down infront of the screen to watch a nice relaxing movie to take her mind off things for a while?
I suggest http://www.defaultmovie.com/

Dear MotherF,

Looks like a fine documentary; I watched the preview. Whose default is it?

Regards,
John

IMHO it's the lender's fault.

Montanaland's girlfriend should also look into The National Defense Education Act if she takes a job in an inner city school she can have a protion of her student loads forgiven, the portion goes up the longer she can stick it out.

Dear MotherF,

True - that's one way. Here's a link to others, as well:

She needs to carefully read the terms of her student loans. She is temporarily exonerated from paying back the student loans if her salary fall below a certain level. Back in 1993 that level was $16,000.There`s no way she will come close to that income level working here in MX unless she takes a position at a few select preparatorias.
And as I said, that level is now 19 years old.

A breakdown? I doubt it. (I wouldn't be surprised if that's how she herself describes what's she's going through.) It sounds like your girlfriend is in a funk about her job situation---her self-esteem has taken a hit. But then, this is the case for many people worldwide who are out of work.

How motivated is she? I do find it unfortunate that she isn't posting and engaging others on this site herself because there's been some useful advice offered. Also, it's obvious you really care for her, but it might be time for you to step back and stop enabling and advising her. She needs a dose of reality to make her realize she can't be picky about where to work nor impulsive in her decision-making. Moreover, if she's a clingy, please-take-care-of-me type of person, then teaching in a foreign country may not be ideal for her.

Thanks again for the kind advice!... I keep pointing out to her when we speak on the phone that any teaching position no matter what city/state is good at this point as she just needs a couple more years experience. I'm not overly worried about her future job outlook..as I know she'll get picked up somewhere... eventually. Folks like me who didn't major in a solid marketable degree (business) should be a little concerned however.

Shocked

Wouldn't bet on that. I don't think that anything is particularly solid and marketable these days...

You're probably as "safe" as anyone else - especially if you're willing to travel.

Are you saying she needs to be able to save (or have available to spend on something) the equivalent US$3000-5000 per month?

Thanks for the replies!

I forgot to mention that she also has 80k+ is student loans so her road to clearing that up could be a little longer than others. I added the 3-5k per month amount just to categorize her in the starting (37k-45k$US) teacher pay scale rather than the tefl one. She is american, and I repeatedly tell her to consider "most" states so she can get more experience and stop coming in second place with her interviews. Teach away was mentioned as a middle east recruiter for certified teachers, but I'm sure there are other ones out there.

Where in WY or ID do they start teachers at 37 to 45?

Dear Steinmann,

"The average beginning teacher salary in Wyoming is $43,010 and the average overall teaching salary is $56,100, the 16th highest among US states according to the National Education Association."

http://www.teachercertificationdegrees.com/certification/wyoming/

Idaho: "Under the new contract, teacher salaries for those currently employed will range from $39,913 for a beginning teacher with a bachelor's degree, no experience and no graduate credits to a high of $84,121 for a teacher with at least 20 years experience, a masters' degree and nine graduate credits.
Teachers who start after Oct. 15, 2012, will receive pay ranging from a low of $35,000 to a high of $73,766."

Montana's starting salary, however, sucks: about $25,000

Regards,
John

Thanks for clarifying that, John. I was just shooting from the hip, just going on my feeling that salaries out west aren't generally very high for beginners. Starting salaries are a little higher where I teach.

Perhaps the OP's ladyfriend might consider teaching out here. Districts are still hiring here. We never seem to be able to fill all available positions - not even in this economy.

Hey Montanaland

Your ID says that you are a Fuel truck operator in the Bakken. If so, you must be aware that they are doing lots and lots of hiring in the Bakken area - and also for K-12 teachers. Has she applied there?

VS
(and why are you here on a board for ESL/EFL teachers? Are you doing English for Fracking? Cool)

Blue collar work that pays more than teachers can ever dream of... Ahhh how I also love to have choosen such a path in life. No student loan debt, work with both my hands and my mind, upward mobility with a career path and benefits.
