So, let me get this straight. I plan to spend around 30 days in the States in 2013. This means I have to file, but will pay no taxes on income earned in KSA. After that, I am a bonafide resident of KSA and can spend more than 30 days in the States and still pay no taxes, but I still have to file. Correct or not, oh wise ones?
BTW, the links don't work and I'm too lazy at the moment to dig into the .gov website. |

Dear abayababy,
Pretty much right, I'd say. Some will tell you, "You don't have to file at all." But I always did - it takes only a half-hour or so, and it might save you some grief down the line (Keep copies, of course).
Regards,
John |

You have it right abayababy. The law says that you are supposed to file every year and declare all income from all sources (even if you rob banks or hit the lottery). Then those overseas can add a form 2555 and deduct all foreign income from a job. Uncle puts out an instruction book just for expats that is available through the irs.gov site. Great reading for those suffering from insomnia...

Thanks, wise ones. As soon as Scot chimes in, I'll be able to determine whether or not my assumptions are correct . I suppose you "old-timers" do have some usefulness here after all! |

| When I declare foreign income, am I expected to file any sort of statement from my employer such as their version of a W2? |

Dear abayababy,
Nope - no W-2s in Saudi
"I suppose you "old-timers" do have some usefulness here after all!"
Whew - that's a relief. For a while there, I was afraid we were all going to be
banned from the forum and confined in "assisted-living" facilities.
