Dear Muslim expat,
"Kuffar means to cover and in the case of non-believers we say that they cover the truth with lies. This is not an insult or a derogatory name, . . ."
So, calling someone a liar isn't insulting or derogatory - my, I learn something new every day.
Regards,
John |

JimJonesSic, I stated in the previous post that you should phone them. It's a little late now as the semester starts after Ramadan and they have removed their ad from tefl.com. They were not saying in their ad that they were recruiting for Madinah either and their ad was pretty vague. I'm sorry I didn't visit this forum earlier but we are busy finishing the semester here because we started late.
Sorry John, bad use of language. A better word would be misconceptions. You can see from my responses to people on this forum that at times the misconceptions fly thick and fast. Besides the "truth" is different for everybody. Muslims respect that not everyone is going to embrace Islam and the Qur'an says there is no compulsion to accept Islam. |

As salamu alaikum,
Dear Muslim Expat,
Just to clarify, you said that "al-Khaleej'/Direct English were hiring for the University of Madinah and that the university was hiring directly as well. Is that so?
What are the minimum qualifications and experience required for lecturer positions? Are there more senior roles available, if so what are the requirements?
Do you have any idea of the package on offer?
Basic Salary
What is the salary range? How is it calculated? This is perhaps more relevant to a direct hire as I believe other members have given a breakdown on how ones pay is calculated for direct hire positions.
Education Allowance
If an education allowance is provided and if so for how many dependants? or if admittance for dependants of school going age in to public schools is a possibility.
Medical Cover
If employed through a recruitment company, what is the class/ level of cover offered?
Length of Contract
Is the contract for 12 months? and how many months are paid holiday?
Contact Hours
What are the contact hours? Do you have to do a split shift?
Jazak Allah Khair,
Muhammed Abbas Khan
And on a personal note, I understand that you are teaching or have been teaching out there. If so it would be great if you sent me a private message so that we can discuss employment in Madinah. I am graduating - insha Allah - in 2013 and so may stay on here in the UK to do an MA or if I have a feasible offer go out to KSA for a few years. Anyway, hear from you soon. |

MuslimExpat: I'm loathe to argue since it might come close to arguing religion, which is prohibited on this forum, but I'm finding your attitude and tone incredibly insulting, not only in your religious sanctimony, but also your repeated references to my "misconceptions" about travel in Saudi Arabia.
I'm aware of the Quranic prohibition on non-Muslims entering the sacred mosque (no different from Mormon bans on unbelievers visiting their temples), but the ban on non-Muslim access to all of Mecca as well as Medina is a distinctly Saudi thing for which I've generally heard three distinct arguments: 1. allowing just anyone to visit the two holiest cities in Islam would cheapen their value; 2. allowing non-Muslims there would distract Muslims from their devotions (similar to the Greek reasons for forbidding women in Mt. Athos); 3. it's a Muslim country and the Saudis can do as they want. The first two seem to amount to "kafirs will defile the place," the last one is an example of the naturalistic fallacy that doesn't explain why the Saudis have this rule in the first place.
If you have another justification for this that doesn't amount to either "infidels will taint the place" or "it's none of your business what we Muslims do," please explain. (Unless it has a valid theological basis, in which case please PM me the text of the verse or hadith since we're not supposed to discuss religion here.)

Dear Muslim expat,
Thank you for your clarification (although I was looking forward to calling a few people liars, safe in the knowledge that I'd be neither insulting them or being at all derogatory ).
Regards,
John |
