PERHAPS the qq friend you have made is very new at her position or is a position that does not have any experience in working with foreigners. If that is true then she knows nothing.

People who don't work directly with foreigners often have zero knowledge regarding the laws regarding legally working in China.

Exactly! My impression as well.

if you want to work there make sure all the conditions are written down and to your liking. DON'T tell them your departure date as you may find that they suddenly can't pay you till 10 days after you are leaving.

Well, I had intended to ask to be paid weekly anyway. If they wouldn't there's no way I'd work for them.
To be honest, I've never once been ripped off at work before in China, in all the years I've been here. But still I know better than to trust a new school like that.

As far as breaking laws - LOOK AROUND YOU - do laws really exist in this place?

To be sure, laws are broken all around me and every day. But I won't be the one getting caught and risk being put on some black list and refused entry into China in the future. I didn't worry about such things in the past, but well.... I've grown older and less eager to take such risks anymore. I've kind of grown tired of China and can't see myself living here long-term again in the near future. But I DO want to come back for a visit, as I have some relatives here I care very much about, and never being able to ever see them again would really break my heart. I just want to make sure I can come back here again anytime I feel like it. And if that means having a little less money to spend right now, then so be it. Makes sense no?

She is just some young girl probably just out of college working in a new school and given the task to find foreign teachers. So at least I can help her a little so she'll know better in the future.

I'd stay away from this one.

Really.

I've been approached a couple of times like this for two different schools. The first time, I blew it off. The second time, I decided to check it out. The second offer led to yet another offer. I found out later that several other FTs had been approached by the same duo who ran back-alley English schools in their homes that weren't even licensed to operate as businesses. The police looked the other way for the Chinese citizens, but I highly doubt they'd look the other way for foreigners who were working illegally.

I'm not sure where you got your information about an oversupply of English teachers here. Do you have a source or is it just your personal opinion?

I know of at least two schools in Zhongshan who are looking for teachers right now. There may be plenty of unsuitable unqualified people who will work illegally, but I don't personally believe there is a surplus of qualified and suitable teachers in China at the moment.

Well, it's just my impression, partially from reading on this forum, that there are now more than enough qualified teachers in China. I don't know how else to explain why we are treated worse than in the past, get paid less, fired more often etc. Of course I could be wrong, but that's my personal impression. Foreigners, including teachers, are a lot less welcome than we used to be about a decade or more ago.
You are right though, it's probably the number of "unsuitable unqualified people" that has increased, not necessarily certified teachers.
Last year I was approached by yet another training center here (Meten), and after I wasted half an hour of my time listening to their teaching approach and how I should try to make a good impression on the students, and what a great and popular school they were running, only to find out that they were only willing to pay 80Y/hour. That's when I walked out. Absolutely ridiculous! Back in 2001 the absolute minimum here was already 100Y! And back then I was not a qualified teacher as well, plus I had zero teaching experience. Not a problem at all for that training center, which happened to be the largest and oldest in Zhongshan by the way. Ten years later, having ten years of teaching experience with all ages and all kinds of classes, with prices in China for just about anything going up radically, I should work for LESS???? I don't think so!!!!
Those are just some examples for why I feel foreign teachers aren't really needed that much in China anymore.
