Kids will also inevitably try and stick their hands into your @ss. |
When I was in Korea, the things kids always did to each other and to teachers was to put their hands together (like you're praying) and then poke each other in the bum crack. It happened to me a couple of times until I grabbed one kids fingers and almost snapped them. Never happened again at the school.
The joys of teaching children. |
This is a Japanese game as well. It's called "kancho" or something. I think it means "goose". They even sing a little song when the do that prayer thing. |
One more reason not to teach kids. I don't think my uni kids will try it.
Lupin, don't worry about the tea ceremony, it is quite a rare occasion. Saying that, it'll probably happen the first month you are here. |

One tip:
Remember that it's not only elementary school where it happens to unsuspecting teachers; 1st Graders in Junior High School love to do it too!
At my JHS the practice is rife amongst the 1st Graders!
Surprisingly it's not the boys at my school that does it, it's a group of girls!
They do it to pretty much every teacher in my "Nenbu", me included. |

I'm curious to know what it is like for bigger people living in a country where anemities, clothing, customs, etc... are suited for a physically smaller population. I'm 6foot 3inches tall and weigh 240 lbs. What are the advantages and disadvantages to this? Any insight is much appreciated.
Cheers,

One school I taught at must have had an architect with a warped sense of humour. One doorway was tall enough to let me pass through, but the next one... say hello to a creased forehead and a concussion before class.

The hands in the bum crack thing is puzzling though. What on earth would make someone think that's funny? |
Not everyone is as anal retentive as Westerners |
