IELTS and TOEFL came into existence long after the Cambridge CPE exam. The CPE has been in existence for almost a century.

This may be so, but what I was asking is where exactly these tests are recognised, and what someone would have to gain from doing the CPE (for example) as opposed to IELTS or TOEFL.

I'm not just talking about the CPE, but also KET, PET, FCE, CAE, BEC and BULATS. I understand the differences between each test, but seem to be missing the purpose that they serve. Anyone?

For various immigration and academic uses (other than America) the TOEIC and IELTS have pretty much taken the show.

TOEFL is pretty much only used (in my experience) for people headed for the US.

TOEIC in Business or employment applications.
IELTS academic for uni entrance in many places.
IELTS general for other uses (immigration services as an example).
The other Cambridge tests are pretty much focused on the European markets.

I was at the Cambridge ESOL conference in BKK last month and they didn't even try to suggest that we, as Asian training / testing centers, do anything other than YLE, PET, KET, FCE and IELTS.
