It seems I am indeed mistaken. According to the government website.. 'dependants of persons who have right of abode, right to land or unconditional stay in Hong Kong can work without seeking the permission of the Director of Immigration. ' Those who are sponsored by visa holders and applied after July 2003 do not have the right to work.

All I know is that when I renewed my ID in December 2003, the immigration officer said it was valid for working in Hong Kong. I have been teaching in Hong Kong since returning in December from the USA. The second school I applied at also accepted the ID as valid for work. Either (1) Immigration was wrong, or (2) schools don't care. Either way, I am entitled to work until someone stops me. But seriously, check with Immigration if you have any doubts or questions. And as far as HK is concerned, teaching by foreigners is getting harder to do with changes going on in the schools and government. My suggestion: head elsewhere if you really want to enjoy teaching and living in Asia.

Why would you apply to teach at other schools if, as you claim, you owned a company that had contracts in Macau and had its very own school on HK Island?
