Yes, Ludwig, your view is undeniably lovely and Sai Kung is a beautiful location. I would love to live there myself, but there's little point if it means commuting a couple of hours to work and back each day. My view is very pleasant also - admittedly not as nice as yours, but then I only travel five or ten minutes to work each day, so that in itself is compensation. The point I guess is, there ARE nice places dotted around Hong Kong in which to live. (Perhaps Ludwig, you should be inviting us all over to YOUR place for a get together??? Very Happy )

I, too, used to suffer from this illusion.

Believe me, my living here does indeed entail a greater amount of time travelling everyday, but it is only a $8 minibus ride to the MTR station at Choi Hung and from there it is an easy task to get to Kowloon Tong. When I arrive back home on Friday afternoon and know I can be there till Monday morning if I so wish, it is worth that extra bit of travel in that week of work. Also, the air is vastly better (and there are some sublime Indian restaurants here). One thing I missed very much during my time on mainland China was a decent Indian meal. Here in Sai Kung however I can have two portions of pilau rice, two garlic nans, four popodums, three bottles of King Fisher beer, a portion of king prawn tikka, a prawn madras, a portion of onion bahjai, and a portion of vegetable Bombay delivered to my door for my girlfriend and I for less than $150.

Come on Lud,

Webcam shots, menu run-throughs? The original point was that there are a variety of serviceable options. If you want the "back to nature" lifestyle there are plenty of options (Sai Kung, Lamma, Lantau, Cheng Chau, etc.) If you want the to be in the middle of it all with quick access to everything under the sun 24 hours a day then you've got Central and to a lesser degree Wan Chai and Causeway Bay. If you want to live on a shopping centre of course there's that. If you just want to live in place X because its near work there is that. The point is that there are options for every taste and to write off all of HK as having the negative characteristics of a few of its parts is just stupid.

No, Ludwig is giving a great opinion. What help have you been?

Fred Says: What help have you been?
Fred's only posting thus far on the topic: I know who you are! hehehe

Fred:

In case you your reading skills are as lacking as your writing, interpersonal and reasoning skills, I will have you notice that I just pointed out that there are plenty of different environments in which to live in Hong Kong. So what have I done to help? I added my two cents and attempted to get the discussion back on track. I've also given advice on a wide range of topics in other discussions, something you seem either unable or unwilling to do. I'm betting on the former. You possess the unique combination of never being able to shut up and never having anything useful to say. So go build a Lego R2D2 or something and let the people at the adult table get on with the big people talk.

Ludwig,

How does the rent compare for a place in Sai Kung with, say, Causeway Bay or Wan Chai on the island?

Incidentally, compliments on the view - looks like the perfect therapy after a day/week in the city.

Purple Fairy:

I knew you in Indonesia. And, you had to come here and follow me. Why are you always following me around. Can you not do things on your own?

You know Fred, I really thought it would be impossible for you to get any stupider. I have never worked in Indonesia. I've worked in a few other places but not there or anywhere near there. Keep trying big boy!

'Mark-O', I would not know as I have never lived on HK Island and have no idea as to the rents demanded over there. To be quite honest, I avoid that particular island as much - and as by far - as is possible. Going there when I have to is enough for me.

What I can tell you, however, is that in Hung Hom I paid $7,500 a month for a two bedroom flat whilst here I have the top floor of a three-storey house for which I pay $9,000 a month. I pay more as I have the whole rooftop terrace that is great for autumn (when it is cool enough to sit out at night).

Fred,
I'm not angry, I'm just not interested in being lied about. It's like when I have a clueless kid in class. Just because some kids can't get it after a million tries doesn't mean you stop teaching him or her. It's alright Fred, I'll hold a spot for you in Special Ed.

Mark-O and Ludwig,
For a postcard view on the island you will have to pay more but there are lots of places around $7000+ with two bedrooms, a balcony or roof, and half-decent mountain, skyline or harbour view. They will likely be in older "Chinese" buildings, as they're called but a lot of them are alright. You just need the time to sift through a lot of unimpressive overpriced places to get to the good stuff.

Thanks for the replies (to those that actually helped....)

I would like to live in/near the Tai Koo/Quarry Bay area, and I think my budget will allow for *about* HK$ 8000 for rent. Is it reasonable to think that I will be able to find a halfway decent 1-2 bedroom apartment in this area for that price? I'm not *too* worried about a view or a balcony (although I really don't want to open my bedroom window first thing in the morning to look straight across into someone else's apt....)

...and Freddy: If you don't have anything constructive to add here... Rolling Eyes

Ludwig & Prplfairy: thank you both for your replies.

I personally don't intend to live in either of the 2 places I mentioned, but was curious to gain a comparison in rental price with these areas of which I know a little about in terms of rent. I was surprised to hear that "half-decent views" could be acquired for as little as $7k+ - sounds auspicious. I have been told that it is very much a 'search and seek' mission to find something reasonable.

Ludwig, how long would you estimate it to take you to get to Kowloon Tong on an average day?
