Dear Captain_Fil,

I'm curious - since you seem to know so much about the pros and cons of owing a car in the Middle East, may I ask how long you spent/have spent there, if your family was/is with you and whether or not you have/had a car?

Regards,
John

Dear John,

No. I have never been to the Middle East.

I was talking about overseas car ownership in general.

Yes, in some countries there are certain benefits or advantages in owning a car. This is particularly true in the oil-rich Gulf states.

But in other parts of the world, especially developing countries, car ownership may be too much of a hassle.

I was just expressing...my veiled sentiments.

Regards,
CF

Dear Captain_Fil,

Ah, I see - well, I suppose that was useful, but I would suggest that perhaps it might be a good idea to refrain from giving advice about places that you've never been to.

You see, that's why this forum is divided into sections. If one wants to give advice about "overseas .. . . in general," perhaps the "General Discussion" forum would be the most suitable.

There could be a chance that giving such "general advice' might lead some unwary reader astray if he/she doesn't realize that such advice might well not pertain to the specific country forum that it's posted on.

But that's only my opinion.

Regards,
John

If the Capt had been in the Gulf, he might be aware that these countries are not terribly similar to what most would consider a "developing" country. Qatar is one of the richest, if not THE richest, country in the world.

And that explains why his advice was so "clueless" and should have been kept "veiled" or in some other branch where it might be relevant.

Some people just like to get together and share their ignorance.
