Maybe when OP sees funeral money being burned on street corners in the evenings he could get the local bobbie to intervene. The smoke is irritating and the fire danger unacceptable.
Also I hope the education you provide is within the cultural context of the students - not your own.

I came here at the end of August.

I also have the roosters, fireworks, and barking dogs. Kids shi***ng on the street. (university campus also)

I have seen more dogs on this campus then I have any other place. 4th of July is quiet compared to the fireworks here.

Welcome to China.

My University students want to have class outside. I said "Where?' They said on the grass. I said they better tell me in advance so I can bring a chair. No way will I sit on the grass. A kid who must have been 5 just dropped his pants and took a dump.

It still disgusts me, but I am so used to it by now.

I am sure the police are still laughing at that call.

Anyway, China sure give me stuff to write home about.

On the upside, the University is a fantastic place to work. the students are great, and the staff speaks English. The apartment is good. I love it here.

Still the fireworks at all hours, the damn roosters who can't tell the time, and the garbage will always amaze me.
