"My doctor in the UK has been strongly recommending both the implanon which goes in the upper arm and the Mirena coil. I have some reservations about them although she promised me there were no side effects."
This makes me so angry!!! What your doctor from the UK told you is complete bullshit!
A lot of women health centres in Germany and Austria stopped offering the Mirena and the Implanon to their patients because of the side effects. A health centre in Austria had recently completed a study amongst Mirena users and the outcome was neither encouraging nor positive.
The biggest downside is, that once you suffer from side effects the majority of doctors are not aware of the Mirena/Implanon side effects and you will get treated for anything but hormonal side effects.
Doctors tell you about the Mirena that it is convenient, that the hormonal dose is very low and only local, no side effect and it's cheap, too.
The reality is, that the hormones race all through your body and you might get side effect that you don't even relate to the Mirena/Implanon. The insertion can be very painfull and if you need to get it removed shortly after it is not cheap at all. Also it is not necesarily true, that you can conceive immediately once the device is removed. The Mirena can for instance knock-out your ovaries and it takes a while before they recover. Oh, and did I mention that your libido goes down the gutter, too?
There are all different side effects and you should do a good research. Try to look for US websites, they provide more information on side effects and do not just read the Schering website, that is there to sell the product.
I had mine for 7 years and was quite happy with it. Only after I had it removed I discovered the side effects and what great impact they had had on my life. Gosh, I am not a depressive cranky bitch by nature but in fact are quite a balanced, happy and positive person.
Been 4 months now without and I am still battling with health problems that are a result of long-term Mirena use.
Ha, I am getting a bit in a full-on rage now and better stop it. If you want to know more you can PM me and I can send you a few links on this.
Anyway, I'd rather get pregnant than stuffing my body with hormones ever again. |

Thanks Dagi. Useful information. My doctor herself has a Mirena coil and 'is more than delighted with it' as if I wanted to know about her contraceptive choices!
Yes I have done a few searches and it seems quite a few women have had side effects with these devices....
I have opted for the mini pill because the moment I feel it may be doing me no good I can stop it. I really don't trust a Turkish doctor to remove the implanon or coil for me.
I spoke to a male doctor on the phone today and he was far more informative about the side effects of all these methods. |

My doc was pushing all this birth control on me, coils and pills and all that, and I told her I wasn't keen to start dumping a bunch of hormones into my body again (I was on the Pill for about 16 years). Wondering what on earth I might be planning to do for birth control, I said we'd use condoms, perhaps have another kid, then I'd convince my husband to have a vasectomy. She answered, very carefully, that she didn't recommend vasectomies for Turkish men because it isn't good for their psychology and they often have bad sexual side effects as a result, and it would be better for me to go on birth control.
WTF!!!!???? Boo f*cking hoo!!! A relatively insignificant outpatient surgery for him versus another 20 years of hormones, mood swings, weight gain, dry eyes, loss of libido, sunburn... not to mention risks for cancer and heart and blood pressure problems for me. And I should worry he might feel a little bad because those little guys he's never actually seen can no longer swim?
I do like my doctor but that was a bit much... |

Hi All,
i love this thread, I've been on the move the last week so had not read the new stuff for a while. Was sitting in my hotel lobby reading it and had to laugh out loud a few times. Its almost as good as a boozy girls night out!
Mind you I should of read it before going out on a date with a turkish guy I met here (comp tech, fixed my lap top) I spent two hours listening to him talking about his dead wife and ex girlfriends and then it was topped off by him asking if I would mind giving him a h**d job after dinner. Reason being, he did not want to upset his dead wife by having sex , but he thought it ok if I did the deed haha. I cannot tell you how speechless I was and how surprised I could get out of a restaurant and make a hasty exit. Lordy! Oh he did say it would be quick lol as he only does long sex with his wife, but shes now dead. hmmmmm... wow so tempting haha.
Has anyone had a good experience with dating turkish men here haha. That certainly has made me think twice about the whole thing.
Darn it, didn't bring any toys haha |

tarte tatin, actually it was my obgyn here in Istanbul who urged me to get rid of the thing and form personla experience I can say that the removal is a piece of cake, anyone could do that.
After I had consulted him with all kinds of odd complaints his reaction was immediately "It's the Mirena, it's evil, evil, evil, get rid of it."
Afterwards he asked wether I wanted to go on the pill and like yours he was startled when I said I'd use condoms and NFP from now on.
lovetowander, Turkish guys can be funny, can't they? Your date makes a good story for boring parties when people need s.th. to laugh!
The first guy I date here turned out to be a complete *beep* e.g. far to conservative and old-fashioned for a feminist like me.
Recently I met a great guy who I think is fantastic. IMHO it takes a bit of luck but if you find the right one, you can meet great guys here. Just like in any country. |

Yep it sure has made for an interesting girly email or two as well, had to be the all time worst date but Im laughing about it today.
Lordy that sun is hot today, I'm not a huge beer drinker but I think I may trawl around taksim and find somewhere that sells cold coronas or something close to it, as long as it is cold! Anyone know a good bar or cafe with coldies? I have no fridge in my hotel room, its tragic haha.
Cheers girls |

lol yeh its right up on top of my weirdometre as far as dates go thats for sure.
Up side was, he didn't charge me for my lap top service haha. But I figure my service as a listening post, would of cost him more at a shrink. haha.
So girls if you need a laptop serviced just head on down to taksim square, put up with some bullshit compliments, listen to a heart ache story, get asked for a sympathy **ad job, say no and your lap top is like brand new again haha. |

Ok, so where in Istanbul should you make friends and dates? I too made the mistake of dating a guy I met on the street, so dont want to repeat that.
On a different note - can anyone tell me approximately how much a bottle of foundation and a tube of mascara costs in Istanbul? Im leaving for Istanbul this Sunday from the Czech Republic and am wondering if I should stock up. Cosmetics are expensive here in the CZ - 25 to 50 percent more than in the states. So, Im referring to brands like Max Factor and Cover Girl, not Este Lauder. Thanks. |

"Ok, so where in Istanbul should you make friends and dates? "
Amongst friends, people you meet at the work place, social groups, hit the TEFL-crowd, etc. Just be social and outgoing and you'll meet people. |
